Day 1 model year 1970 Olds - any model
Hi all,
Just out of curiosity, who has a car built on day one of the 1970 model year?
I believe my vert was but I was wondering what other cars rolled off the line
before mine. Mine has a 08A date code and heard from a member on ROP
that about 1,600, give or take, cars were built a day. That would put mine
a little after half way into the cars built that day if that number is accurate.
There were only 2 days in the 1st week of August of 1969, Fri and Sat,
so I know it was one of those two days depending on the number of cars
built a day. Mine was built in the Lansing plant.
Thanks for any info provided!

I am sure that some pilot cars were run before real production cranked up. But yes, August 1st week is a very early car! What plant did it come from? I would assume that being in Chi town it came from Lansing? But this many years it could have came from any plant.
Kurt (Wmachine) my have records on when exactly production began.

My Supreme is a Freemont build..
BF 00449
O8E, build sheet schedule date is Aug 29 1969
....100891 body sequence..
Do not know if this helps, but the car was a fairly early build...

I don't believe that will help determine the build date. I don't have the 69 & up build start dates for the various plants but I do have 65-68. It appears that F-85 builds followed the Toro lines a week or more in those years. Beings the vin sequence includes all models and the F-85 following the Toro models,I doubt that will help. It appears by my records that in 66 the Toro started production on 8/16 followed by the F-85 & big cars on 9/13. In 67 Toro started on 8/9 followed by F-85 on 8/25 & big cars on 8/29. In 68 Toro started on 8/7 followed big cars on 8/17 & the F-85 on 8/18.

sometimes, after changeover, when the line started back up,it could take 2 days to get the first cars off the line due to stopages. usually it was paint dept. now keep in mind ididnt start there till 76, and it was the same thing for the 28 yrs i was there. even when there wasnt change in the body, there were changes in technology and procedures.there were time we wouldnt get a car for hours, then get 4 or 5 then another gap then more cars.

That's my point,if other models were being built a week or more,it can't have a low vin sequence #. The body # on the cowl tag might be another story.

Bear also in mind that you had to fill the lines, too. The plants I work for, if you want to count a body panel from coil steel to a fender rolling out the door on a car, you're looking at 2 to 3 shifts in Stamping and stores, 2 shifts in Weld, a shift in paint, maybe one in the paint buffers, depending on when Assembly wants it, and two in Assembly.

I forgot to mention that important piece of info. Sorry. It was built in the Lansing plant.
The other thing is that I don't have the door decal, so I don't know what that date is.
Diego,
It is M101048.

That's not correct. For the 1969 model year, Toro VIN sequence numbers started with 500001. Other models started with 100001. In later years this was broken up even further, with full size cars getting a different start number also.

I stand corrected. I didn't realize that the Toro used a different start # for the vin. When did they change to different start #'s for the different models?
