1969 Cutlass V8 350 Automatic correct idle?

Hi guys!!

Replaced today my wiring cable set, distributor cap and rotor.

Also installed a tach this morning and car idles at 500rpm in Park lock, when engine is warm.

It runs good and never seems to stall.

But what do you think about the 500rpm idle?
Isn't it too low? Had in mind that before I replaced these parts, it would idle maybe a little bit more.

Thanks a lot!!!

Idle should be 850 rpm in drive, if you run it lower it may cause problems when lights, a/c, fan are running. If you have an HEI distributor these timing settings do not apply.

Here are the specs:

My manual shows 575 RPM in drive for auto trans and 675 RPM for manual trans. According to my Sun Super Tach II, my engine is around 600-700 RPM in drive.

That seems a little high to me too. It goes on to say add 50 rpm with a/c. That would put curb idle in gear at 900 rpm. If you look at the 1968 spec just above that it says 650 rpm. I would go with the 1968 spec.

I could dig out my Motor manuals and check, but it really doesn't matter where the error came from.

The 1969 CSM specifies 575 RPM in Drive (Figure 6M-102, Page 6M-43)

I thought that seemed high and didn't look at the 68. Heres another link:

Thanks for all your replies!!

Car idles smoothly at 800 at start up, then drops at 650 in Park Lock once warm, and stays nicely at 550/600 in D!

No loss of power using accessories and Voltmeter says between 13.5 and 13.8V!

I think it runs good!!
