engine help

I have an olds 455 396021F block with Ga heads. I have checked the vacuum andI have 10-11 in/hg. I also checked my timing chain by turning the crank manuallywhile looking at the distributor. There was 2-7/8 in of play before the rotorstarted to move.

So now I think my timing chain needs to be changed. I bought this car from aguy that didn't know what was in the engine as far as the cam. The valve trainlooks like it is still stock.

I wanted to know what cam and timing chain is a good replacement for stockGa heads and valve train?

Yea, I think a timing chain replacement is in your future.

Have a look at your oil pick up too, It might be full of plastic bits left over from chain, and other things. This means you need to drop the oil pan to have a look and clean things out.

Any chance you have this mounted on an engine stand? Or is it still in the car?

Octania-you are right anything that is added will be an improvement but will any cam work with the stock valve train or what are some good suggestions?


Don- The engine is in the car now. Will there be plastic in the screen of the oil pick up or will I have to take it apart to check? Also what is the plastic bits from?

He is saying that the factory cam gear has plastic coating on the gear. Of which over the years it gets hard and brittle then falls off, drops into the oil pan and collects in the oil pump pick up.
If your going to change the timing chain set, get a "Cloyes" true roller set.
If your thinking cam, you should get a cam and lifter with valve springs kit.
It will be a job to do, not for the faint of heart.

Gene- Thanks for the input now I understand were the plastic bits come from. I think I am going to stick with the timing chain set for now and check the oil pick up. I am a wiz at electrical work but never did any internal engine work. I know changing the cam, lifter, and valve springs will be a task but how hard is it really?

If you pull the heads off, an easy job. Changing springs with heads on is a bit more challenging.
Also if you have that much play in the chain , it on the verge of jumping time.
Keep us with info as to how it goes.
