Question Self dimming rear view mirrow?

I was taking out more of my interior (1969 Olds 442) and the rear view mirror has a wire that runs down and over into the dash. Anybody know what this is? The mirror also has a switch on the bottom that says DAY on one side and NIGHT on the other??

The wire is for the map light that is mounted in the bottom of the mirror, if the car was so equipped.

The mirror is a Day/Night mirror, meaning the glass is made so that there are two reflection positions. Day position provides a regular mirror reflection; Night position provides a reduced reflection to darken lights (prevent headlights from blinding you). That "switch" is a mechanical lever that moves the mirror to bring the Day or Night plane into position.
