1970 442 Gas Tank venting issues & fuel surge tank
I am trouble shooting a fuel delivery issue on a 1970 442. It appears that the car is not getting enough fuel even with a new fuel pump. I noticed that every time I open the gas cap, I get a burst of pressurized gas fumes. Somehow, the tank is not vented property. I even replaced the vented gas cap. Also, I have no idea how to check the white split plastic thing they call “Surge Tank”. What is the purpose of it, and how can I check it? Any ideas on solving this venting issue is appreciated. Thanks in advance

The gas cap should be a non vented cap.
The surge tank (the white plastic part) should have a material in it like the material in a vent on the air cleaner.
Your vent tubes on the gas tank are probably clogged.
I would drop the tank, and check out the inside. If it is original, you may have sock filter material clooging the nent tubes.
There would be no other cause.

Thanks MY442. Looks like it also has the wrong gas cap. I'll try to dig up a non-vented cap. I also ordered the surge valve today so I can replace it when I check the vent hoses.
