Great find and great job. Congrats and good luck.
I scraped 8 sets of big block heads years ago and am still kicking myself. I thought noone wanted this stuff(before I had internet access). I was wrong. I feel I should have kept it all now for history sake.

today was the last day of my vacation so i decided to clean up the 71 SX. it cleaned up real nice. i have it running real good and got the front brakes fixed so that i can drive it. i still have to change the back brake lines on the rear end, they are leaking. i am a little surprised how well a stock 70 Toronado engine runs. i have the original engine but it has a toro engine in it now. the guy i got it from said it did not originally have a dual gate in it so i changed it out with a standard one and i am going to put the original hood on it this week. this hood has paint chipping and has a crack in the fiberglass. i like the OAI hood on it but there are more bubbles in the paint that are sure to chip also. i figure the original hood would look better than paint chipping off of an OAI hood.

No ya wouldn't. It would sell itself. Peeps would be knocking at the door asking if it's for sale. I don't think Eric will have any trouble selling it. But I know what you really meant. My God, that car looks drop dead gorgeous in the sun. I was telling my Mrs. the other day I really would like a vert.....

OEM OAI hood is coming off to be replaced with a stocker??? Hmmmm.......

lol, it's not hard at all with a mortgage on my parents house hanging over my head. we are not that much into convertibles anyway. the one that is going to be harder to sell is the Rallye 350. if i am going to keep one of the W-30s i will have to sell it.

Allan.. i wonder if they didn't prep the fiberglass right because it is the only thing that has paint bubbling. i will give the buyer of the car the option to buy it since it is the same color but they would likely want to repaint it anyway, not to mention the cracks in the fiberglass. i'm just glad that he had the original hood painted at the same time. and remember... i am the guy that took out a 4 speed to put in an automatic, lol.

Eric, some one who will know is Eddie. He's a professional bodyman by trade and just fixed an OEM W25 hood he 'stole' from a guy because it had some broken fibreglass on the drivers corner. Here's his link: https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...=newpm&u=37821

and here's the link to the hood he fixed: https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...tml#post409505

I like that....... "he stole a W25 hood".

Eric.....if you ever need any advice on fixing the hood, just let me know. Take some pictures so I can get an idea what's happening with the hood and I can give you some advice how to fix it without breaking your bank account.

thanks but i am not a body man. i have a high degree of confidence that i would make things worse for a true professional to fix my mistakes. i will likely sell the hood the way it is if the person that buys the car don't take it. i will post a couple pictures to get you input but i don't think i am the man for the job.

Which hood has the bubbling paint? Is it the W25 hood that's already on the car? If it's the fiberglass, since it is fiberglass, we know it's not rust. Sounds like a crappy primer that Chrysler used in the 90s. If you ever looked at some early 90s Chrysler vehicles and a few GM ones, the paint on the hood and roof would bubble, then flake off the car.

A friend on mine had a 93 Dodge Shadow. Some sort of weird green. It had a couple small chips on it. I put my air blower to the hood and had a snowstorm in my garage. The paint blew right off the hood.

the only problem is the fiberglass part of the hood. i don't see any other areas with bubbling. i figured it is a paint or prep issue for the bubbles but there are a couple cracks in the fiberglass also.

Is it a real one with the steel underneath? If there's a crack in one of those, it means something probably hit it. Those old fiberglass hoods were made out of what looks like plastic. I can't see them cracking from age. Maybe the person who did the previous bodywork didn't see it and primed over it? I'd have to see what the crack looks like to make an accurate judgement.

i think that is what happened. the guy i got it from said the same thing. it is an OEM hood. it could be a great hood but needs to be stripped and start over.... now the hood on my other convertible is real bad. how hard is this to fix?

From the looks of that, I'd say they smacked into something with that hood. The piece around where the chrome goes, those aren't bubbles, those are paint cracks from hitting something. I'm assuming the big crack came from the hood being stressed when it hit something. It's bad, but it's fixable. I wish I lived close to you. I'm wishing I could get my hands on that thing. Plus, you'll notice the hood has lifted from the metal frame. You'll need some sort of glue to stick it back down. I used a marine glue called 920 to bond mine back to the metal frame. I've been told windshield urethane will work too, but I can't be sure as I didn't try it.

The big crack will have to be fiberglassed. It's all the way through the plastic-y fiberglass. If you had a D/A palm sander you could sand some of that paint off (at the front part of the hood) and find out if the fiberglass is cracked there too.

I didn't realize the hood you were talking about was on the red W30. I thought you were referring to the blue convertible you posted above.

Editted to add.....That hood looks like a 71 or 72? I didn't know you bought more than one red car?

lol, i am not very clear wording my posts. i was talking about the blue car but i don't have pictures of the bad paint or little cracks. i already had pictures of this brown hood from the 71 442 convertible, i was just wondering what you thought about it while on the subject. the hoods on the two W-30 are in nice condition. i have 2 more extra 70 OAI hoods that will need just a little work but nothing like the brown hood in the pictures.

Sorry Eddie. Just a reference to the good price you got on it.

From the sounds of it, you guys should form a temporary partnership and fix the OEM W25 hoods. I'm sure you could end up getting at least what Thorntons is asking for an OEM all restored. I may be shooting myself in the foot here....

I don't mind it at all. I thought the joke was funny

I agree that it would be cool to repair all those hoods to mint condition. They would be easy to sell because everyone is looking for an authentic W25 hood. The guy who sold me my hood told me he could easily get me double what I paid for it, right now if I wanted to sell it. But I'm not one to sell things. Once I own it, I keep it.

Oh.....that is the brown one you were referring to. So all the cars came with a W25 hood? Well....all except the green one. I didn't notice the brown one had the W25 hood too. That was an awesome find!

Wow! I just figured out that you guys are about 1200 miles apart. Eddie you're about 2300 miles from me. I wish I knew how much it cost to ship that hood to you, get it fixed and then route it to me.....Eric, can you PM me what kind of $$$ you are thinking on it?

Oh man, you're killing me here.... I just got my '70 SX convertible on the road Saturday after it was out of action for two years, and now I'm committing mental car adultery.

i have people lined up for the OAI hoods. i have not priced them yet. i know that near mint OEM hoods sell for $3000 and sometimes higher. these are not mint though. i wouldn't have any idea how to ship something like that. i have two 70 OAI hoods and maybe the blue 72 OAI hood if the car buyer don't take it.

It'll probably depend on who ships it. I think UPS prices their shipping by size? Which would mean the price will be high because the hood is huge. There's another shipper, I think it's FED EX? They ship by weight, which wouldn't be too bad because the hood is fairly light for it's size.

i had a couple people ask for pictures of the back side so here it is. also what it looks like with the other hood. i did find out some sad news tonight... it does have the original OD code transmission in it but i do not have the original engine like i thought i did. i have the heads, carburetor, and intake but no block. i also checked the gears and code to the rear end. it is a R3 code, that is a 2.56 posi. i checked and it still has the 2.56 gears. it don't have any trouble spinning the tires but will also get reasonable MPG.

a little more brake work and this car will be ready to sell.

Eric, I actually like it better with the steel hood. Nice job fitting it BTW. Don't forget to put a 71 rocket on the stone shield. What a pretty car, even if it's not the original engine. I don't think you'll have any trouble selling it.

I like the steel hood too, but nothing looks as good as the ram air hood. The ram air hood is the ultimate look for any muscle car, in my opinion. But still, this car looks amazing with the steel hood on it. You should have no problem sell it.

Eric, you might want to take the front passenger park light off and clean it out. It looks like there's either water or dirt or something in there that's making it look dull.

Good eye. Prolly its' rusty. Yup it's the little details like that most buyers will pick on to get better pricing. Comes out real easy if you have a 18" extension for your socket (the cross bracing for the bumper/fender gets in the way a bit).

I think if my car wasn't silver, I might want it to be that blue.

I think he could just take the lens off and clean it from there. That is, if it's dirt. If it's rust, then yes, he'll have to take it out and repaint it white.

Eric, I have set of nice ones. You want me to send them to you? I know what a PITA these things are to restore especially if they're rusty.

That car is a beauty! I have been enjoying this thread all along.

Try one of those headlight renewal kits on your tail lights and other plastic lenses. It will make pop like new...

Way to go! That should put a few coins in the bank. Sorry to hear about the fleabay jerk. They seem to fall out of the trees this time of year. Actually just about all the time..... I'm sure you'll get a serious bidder soon.

the green 442 is alive. i got it started today. i sanded the points and it fired right up. i have to drain the gas because it stinks so bad i could hardly breath. i hope to take it for a drive this week. just trying to decide if i am going to finish it or sell it like it is. i have to pull the F heads off of it because they belong to the blue W-30. i have the original engine for this and it still has the original trans in it. i may put the original engine in it and see if i can get it to run and keep this engine.

No way I could talk you into engraving a line onto that F, making it an E and selling me those heads for a couple hundred bucks huh??? I'd hate to see you cut loose of some F's so cheap.

Just to update.... as of today I have sold enough to be paid off and debt free to all this. 2012 has been a tough year with lots of ups and downs. New management job at work, buying/rebuilding the jetfire, buying this guy out, getting it all home, light fixing of cars to sell, selling loads of parts, worrying about the mortgage on my parents house.......
Time for some R&R!!!!!!
