I have a fender that has some surface rust, I have taken the DA sander down, removing 40 year old GM primer, and I still have some spots of surface rust, where a sratch went throught the primer, etc. Can the rust ever be removed,?. Will sand blasting remove it?., best primer to seal it Any ideas, tips would be appreciated..

Any anyone out there ever restored a 70-72 Cutlass NOS fender with some very light surface rust from scratching, and thin GM primer application. Best way to remove, seal any surface rust..thanks.

Depending on the severity of the rust, I would try to sand it down with 80 grit to see if that would take it out. If not, I would lightly sandblast the bad areas to get rid of the rust. Once the rust has been removed, sand the entire fender down with 150 or 180 grit. Don't worry if there are pit marks as it's not important to get rid of them at this stage. After the 150 or 180 grit sanding, apply an epoxy primer to the fender. After the epoxy is applied, spray over that with a urethane primer surfacer that has the ability to give a little surface build. Once that is dry, you can sand the fender down until all blemishes are removed. Make sure you understand the use of the paint products and how they are applied. If the pit marks are a little deep, you can apply a glazing filler to the areas and then primer over that once it has been sanded smooth.
