chain hoist

hey guys i have a 1 ton chain hoist to help lift engine blocks out of the and on to stand or onto a bench. bye the way that was the intent of purchasing the hoist. just not sure how to hang it? the barn is two story. didn't now if i should put a 4x6 across the floor upstairs and hang it down through a hole or should i make a frame out of some 4x4s with a 4x6 across the top? i need help any ideas.

Make the frame, Use 4x6 for the uprights and 4x8 for the cross member be safe

when i used a hoist back when, i just took a couple 2X4s and tossed across a couple trusses and hooked the hoist to it. the only thing about this is when you get the engine up you have to move the car backward. with a cherry picker all you have to do is roll the engine where you want it.

I just finished helping a guy take a motor out of his truck and put a new one in.took about 30 minutes to do using my big blue mobile lift.

I've seen a steel frame with rollers in my friends ole trimey garage. It looks kinda like a swing set with rollers on the 4 corners and the chain hoist in the center. Only problem is the Hood has to come off to lift the engine.

I plan on usin a sawmill 4x4 real 4 inch to support my chain hoist tranny not attatched is what 600 pds? 425 whadda ya think?

The only problem I have had with rough cut lumber is it can have knots and flaws that could allow it to snap. Check it out visually good for blemishes.

X2 on that as I stated earlier in this thread I think a 4 x 4 is not big enough to allow for a safety margin. It does depend a lot on the grade of the lumber being used. Clear fir being the best, it goes down hill from there.
