I have been getting some restoration work done to my 1970 442 conv. I was looking at parts gathered for this and came across an NOS never had acid or water added Delco Energizer Y71 battery. Does anyone know what cars this fits and how rare it is. Has it much value? Date code is M21 1

Dimensions for the battery are 12 inches long, 6 5/8 wide 8 inches high.

i think it may be for a full size gm.

It was neat to see your battery. It looks similar to the reproduction battery my Dad purchased for his car, but his 1972 car has side posts.

Someone had a few of these and was selling them on eBay Canada last year for $159. Here's a link.

Wild about Cars had some info that popped up related to 1971. Here's a link to that.

The Wild about Cars site might be a good place to poke around and find out some more about that battery. Thanks again for posting the pictures. It was neat to see a NOS battery.

OG is the standard trans in a 442 in 1970 should be on the data plate as well with

70-0G-XXXXX

With the X's the tranmission production number

Sorry. I'm new to this forum and had initially posted on the general discussion thread. Did not realize that it would cause a problem. I will try and tighten up my skills and do better.

The links from Happy were very helpful and the trans question I sneaked in was great info from Steven. I would like to ask Steven, do all the 442 trans have this odd marking on the side? The people I dealt with seemed surprised or just pulling my leg.

From what I know most trans had the code painted on the top like that. Though I have only seen it on one of my cars. Though that doesn't mean it wasn't there originally and was removed when cleaned or painted over. Your trans should have a tag on it as mentioned riveted on the passenger side. There is also a VIN derivative stamped on the trans case as well on the passenger side as well

The correct replacement battery would be a R-71 group 24 battery. The Y-71 will work in a pinch but not suggested and less valuable. Can you pull back on the trans marking and submit a photo of it. All of the marking's on the transmission I've seen are black for 70.

That is correct.

The Y (yellow) series of Delco batteries from this era had lower Cold Cranking Amps and lower Reserve Capacity than the R (red) series. Otherwise if the number after the letter were the same, they were the same external size.

i.e. the Y-71 and R-71 would be the same physical size, but the R-71 would have higher electrical capacity ratings.

Oldsmobile factory batteries were R series; the Y series for our cars was available for lower cost in the aftermarket.

Some lower-priced GM models used Y series from the factory, particularly on smaller, non-v8 engines.

Thanks all for the info I received. It answered a couple of questions. I don't have a better picture of the tranny . The colors of the marking are gold and black. I am pretty sure they are legit since I have owned the car for 46 years and know the history. I find it odd that it's not on all the 442's.

The battery in the first post is Delco aftermarket. It IS NOS, but be aware they never left the factory with that sticker on the top. I'm not too sure about the yellow paint, I'm pretty sure that was an aftermarket thing, too. One interesting thing to note is th"EYE", 2nd from the + pole. That's the exact right place they were originally, although I'm not sure exactly why. The OG tranny was used in other years of 442, also. My 69 442 has an original OG tranny. Finally, I like the repro batteries...not the acid ones, but the gel or AGM type. I've had good luck with them and you never have to worry about the acid getting on your core support again!
