'66 Cutlass lock question
Lock question for 1966 Cutlass:
Does anybody have an idea how to remove the lock cylinder from the glove box in the center console. I have full access to the back. I can only see two holes on the sides that maybe some tool goes in there? Perhaps the chrome ring around the push button on the top can be removed? Thanks |

not certain about a 66, but most are attached from the "back side". I would be taking a close look at the underside of the lid, and would imagine the cylinder is attached using screws, going by your description, but I am in a truckstop, and not even able to look at my console to try for a better guess. If you can get some decent pics, or wait undil someone who has one see's the post i'm sure you will get your answer
PS welcome to the site

I don't have a '66 either but have seen others that have a lock cylinder release in a slot or hole on the inside of the lock cylinder housing that you press in with a thin blade screwdriver or any small tool, then you pull the lock cylinder out with the key and that allows you to unscrew the top bezel, if it's that type. The chassis service manual should show it.

Thanks for the replies. I was able to find a locksmith who helped me. You do have to push into one of the holes (90 degress from the top - on the side) and insert the key to retract the tumblers and the retainer pin you just pushed in from the hole so you can remove the cyliner. The lock cylinder then pulls out, and then you have to unscrew the retainer that was around the push button "top bezel" where the key goes in.

Mine kept getting lose. Put a little lock tight on the retaining ring when you put it back. Thought it was going to be a 10 min repair that took 2 hours counting the trip to the auto parts store.
