Flame throwers
All right guys here's one for my favorite car guys.
my buddy has a 68 impala and wants to put old school flame throwers on it. I would love to hear your input on this there must be some major risk of damage to the host vehicle right? Well there it is fill me with knowledge. Thanks Dave

I think there would be more damage to the car close behind him than anything.
![]() I see guys with those but mostly on chopped Merc's, doesn't seem to hurt anything on them. They do have tailpipes that go well beyond the back bumper. I'm too young to know how they did it originally but I know it involved exhaust gas and a spark plug or two. I've seen guys with a propane tank in the trunk and the propane is piped to the exhaust pipes and there's some sort of deal to ignite it, the car better be running and revved up good or that could be a big loud problem. ![]() Last edited by Bluevista; January 29th, 2009 at 04:46 PM.. |

Doing it the 'old school' way by choking the hell out of the engine does this - It prematurely wears out piston rings (and to an extent bearings). The extra gas dumped down the cylinders washes away any oil that is on the piston and piston wall. And get used to more frequent oil changes. There will be a strong odor of gasoline mixed in the oil. Is it the smart thing to do? I dont know. Is it cool? Obviously

You can get a flame thrower kit from the Hoffman Group. I haven't heard about the quality of the product; however, I bought some seatbelts from them and I am happy with the product. Their customer service is ok, but not as good as Summit or Kanter.

Common hotrod install in the 50's used sparkplugs, charge up a condensor pull the choke to rich the fuel mixture, hit the switch. Pow flames

![]() Here it is at Frozen Dead Guy Days with some fine young ladies riding on the hood and the gentleman on the roof manning the flamethrower. Too weird to leave in plain sight. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3087/...fa32737c8d.jpg |

I think modern kits use a fuel like butane and an ignitor in the tailpipe, that way you get a constant flame and not pulses, plus you don't damage the engine.

They use a NOS fogger hooked to a separate elect fuel pump or a propane tank of some kind on the newer kits same spark plug coil set up as the good old days I wasn't sure how bad it would hurt his engine going old school. sounds like i should try and talk him out of it a little harder.

![]() I wouldn't mind giving either one of those ladies a ride aboard my land yacht! ![]() BTW, I think the AutoLoc kit works by attaching to the coil and cutting the ignition for one or two strokes. The unburnt fuel is pumped out of the cylinder and the burned by spark plugs that are ignited in the exhaust at the same time.
