Need help and advice on this. My father was driving the car to his school for a look see on the car by a top auto mechanic. On the way, the problems stated above happened, or became noticable at least. The mechanic said it is too much for his kids to have repaired and he didn't have the right tools for it either. My parents want me to sell the car. Thats not going to happen if I can help it.

It is a targetmaster replacement diesel. Walkthroughs on how to fix these problems would be nice, but I know probably not possible.

Help? Advice? mental breakdown here.

I switched my stock engine and tranny to a 350/350 Chevy combo in my 57 Olds. The headers are custom made by a friend.
Now those headers starts to worn out and leaking at the block. The plate is too thin anyway, so I guess it wouldn´t last long.
Are there any aftermarket headers that will fit to that combo, or does anybody out there put the same combo into a 57 Olds, and can give me an advice ????

Thanks alot for your help !!!!

Ok here's the specs
all factory 371 rocket in a 1957 olds 88 4 door hardtop.
Solid 22" mercury at idle,
RPM @ 850-860 at idle, 450 in gear,
4 barrel Rochester (1957 vintage) which I rebuilt with all new gaskets etc...
F/A screws out @ 3 turns
Timing set at 5 degrees with vac. advance unplugged.
With it plugged in runs @ 20-25 degrees.

Currently there are 2 ports in the throttle plate. The front one goes to the dist. and the rear one goes to the throttle dashpot (anti stall doohickey). It starts before it makes even 1/2 a revoloution. which is great. the idle quality however... The RPM surges back and forth and in gear moves alright. Big time hesitation while in gear and above idle. In park you can rev it up slow or fast all day long. In gear tho it seems real sluggish. the engine doesn't sound great either. it seems to sound like a diesel. Not 'dieseling' just that odd sound that a diesel makes.
Put my head by the exhaust pipe and seems to have a random soft popping, not loud backfires. Also still running real rich.
Right now it drives better on the road with the vac. advance disconnected. Not great, just better.

Any ideas?

Looking at getting some aftermarket headers for my play toy.:o I've read a lot of interesting threads and have learned a lot. I just wanted to know what everyones experiences are and favorite brands of headers. Back in high school everyone had to tighten their headers up at every stop sign. Some guys were double gasketing. Have headers come along way in the past 25 years? Don't worry die hard original olds fans, I'm cleaning up the originals and shelfing them for down the road. Some talking points--ceramic vs. stainlass, full length vs. shortys, brand x vs. brand y. Thanks to those who weigh in.

Hey, I was wondering if any one could help me. My plan was to put on an edelbrock intake manifold, a bigger cam, port and mill my cylinder heads. I was almost finished taking everything apart when I noticed these two cracks. How bad are they? Is my block toast? Or should I continue with my build? It ran fine before I took it apart. Here are three pictures of both cracks.Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have replaced the intake manifold gasket twice now, first time before I dropped the engine in and the second time was yesterday (about 4 months later). The reason I changed it this time is because the rubber section in the front had extruded out of it's mating surface and was leaking. This happened right after I got it on the road and I lived with it for as long as I could. After replacing it again yesterday and driving it today, low and behold it is doing the same thing. I am wondering if this is a design problem and if so how do I fix it, or could it be because I am using an Edelbrock performer intake manifold and it is too close to the block causing the gasket to get squeezed out?

I saw a diesel engine in the junkyard yesterday and the Intake loked interesting. An idea came into my head. It looks like a 2 plenum kinda intake. And the tops are both flat. So one could fill in the present hole and drill the top for Webers or Weber type throttlebodies. It could be a very trick looking intake. My question is would it work? Will the diesel intake even bolt up to gas heads? Is there anything I don't know that would get in he way of making this work?

Got this '71 350 Rocket and when I was putting a new waterpump on it one of the lower bolts that goes into the front cover on the engine, not into the block itself, stripped the threads in the hole I think. I was wratcheting it on and when it got to where it almost seemed like it should be getting tight it started spinning freely.
So I think it's a 1/4" bolt with a 20 thread pitch. The holes in the front cover don't have much meat around them but I'm wondering if anybody else has done this and knows if I could get away with upping the size up to I think 9/16"? I don't know much about tapping a hole either, do I just drill into it with a 9/16" drill and tap it with a 9/16" tap? Or is there a better solution? Maybe this bolt could be left off being that it's just 1 of many and isn't going into the block anyhow?

Hi, I need your advise on what type of valvetrain, adjustable rocker arms i should bye. The engine is 350 cui, high comp, ported big valve 5 heads and I,m going to spin it to 6500-7000 rpm.

The cam specifications says 550 valve lift, and aftermarket HP springs.

I have looked at Mondello stuff, wish is a bolt on , but expensive IMO.
What is your advise, and experiense, are Comp:s stamped steel ball and cup rockers the ticket ore should I go the more expensive and difficult way, with a lot of machining.

I Also have a another question in the same ballpark. I notised that Ford smallblock, AMC smallblock and Olds are listed for the same rocker arm at Comp, the red aluminium roller rocker. Do anyone know if thats true, I meen the similarity, for other rockerbrands, for example crane gold rockers?

Please exacuse the spelling.
