I've been driving my 1964 olds 98 around the neighborhood to get a feel for it and see if I think it needs anything. Of course the most noticeable thing is that rough 1-2 shift, but I know that's normal for a slim-jim.
I know you're not supposed to make quick, harsh movements with the accelerator in a slim-jim, but if there are any experts, I'd like to ask if it's okay to shift into Super and gradually floor it. I've done this a few times because I simply love the acceleration you get, but is it particularly tough on the tranny?
I heard an odd clacking-type noise from the engine bay once I hit about 70 in super, I'm assuming it's the motor pinging, I've heard that can happen in a 394 running at heavy throttle on modern fuel. The only reason I don't know is that I'm new to this and I've never actually heard an engine ping, I don't know what it sounds like. I don't think it's the tranny, I'd expect that to be a different sound and to be coming from underneath. Anyway, once I put it back into drive and slow down, everything's back to normal and it drives nice and smooth like always.
If anybody has any advice or do's and don'ts about driving the 394/Slim-Jim combo, or adjustment/tuning tips I'd appreciate it. The car has 40,000 miles on it and has a very recently rebuilt tranny, and it all seems to work great. I'd like it to stay that way for a long time but still have a little fun :) because one of my favorite things about old cars is how they drive, I really don't understand the strailer queen philosophy.

Hi all, I finally got my 98 on the road, the brakes are (at long last) fully functioning so I went out for a drive...first of all the smoothness and power of these things is just great. The only downside is that my speedometer is on the fritz.
It works right (sometimes) up to about 25 miles per hour, and it usually sticks, so I'll go faster and it still says 25, then I go slower and it still sticks. The weirdest thing is how it'll jump up to incredibly high readings by itself. I was going about 25-30 miles per hour the other day and it jumped up to 100 all of a sudden. If my speedo is going to say 100MPH I'd at least like to be going that fast! Also, it'll jump to 15 MPH while I'm parking it (at like 3MPH) and stay at 15 while the car is parked and off.
There is also the possibility that my gas gauge is messed up, too. It reads on full even when I turn the car off all the way.
If anybody knows a fix for speedometers/instrument panels I'd appreciate it. I've tried searching around for similar cases but haven't found anything like my problem.

All the best,
Mack

I have been looking around the Internet for some sizes of wheels/tires for my car, but I am not sure if I have it right. What I am considering is 18" Foose Nitrous wheels with 255/45/18 Nitto 555 tires. After looking and figuring, I believe that size will work, but I am not sure and would like to defer to the more experienced here.

What about it? Is that a proper size, or do I have it wrong?

Hello all. I had intentions of dropping my 70 98 down low via a change is rim size (16s to 13s). Much to my dismay, my 13 inch 100 spoke knockoff wire wheels could not fit because of the massive caliper  .

I now have an oppertunity to pick up a set of 15 inch 100 spoke knockoff wire wheels but before I spend the money, I am wondering if they will clear the damn caliper?

Does anyone know if that would work? I think it will but I hoping one of you guys may have experience with this and can confirm.

Ya, sorry, I know the Public Enemy thing is cliched... I just couldn't help it. Glad to be here. FYI - I'm in Canada. I have a '74 98 in pristine shape - 2 doors, the toothless 455, but all the same, one of the sweetest rides I ever had. My dad actually owned one just like mine when I was a kid. I remember it 'cause it has a plush white leather (vinyl?) interior, and I slammed my fingers in the door. Didn't lose any, thank goodness. Anyhow - Greetings one and all!

I pulled the chrome on the bottom edge of my rear window on my '71 Olds 98, and found that rust had eaten holes in the metal there. I uncovered it...

I pulled the chrome on the bottom edge of my rear window on my '71 Olds 98, and found that rust had eaten holes in the metal there. I uncovered it all and temporarily sealed it up well. It's raining like heck here in Texas today and this afternoon I had water dripping inside from the top of the windshield. I cut the vinyl top in the front over the windshield and checked f/ rust there also, after finding the rust at the bottom of the back one, and found that the area above the windshield was clean and rust free. When I ran my finger along the top of the windshield inside the car, the weather stripping there came off like dust, very dry and gone.
I'm 52 years old now and have had quite afew older cars and trucks during my life, as I've always been a motor-head. I can't remember very many of the old rides I've owned that had rust primarily around the windows. I say primarily because this '71 98 I have doesn't even have any parking lot dings on the sides and is completely rust free, w/ the exception of around the back window, and now I'm hoping I won't find any rust around the windshield, but the windshield IS leaking.
My question is this; Are the older Oldsmobiles know f/ the front and back windows leaking and in-turn rust forming under the chrome and vinyl top in these areas?
I grew up in New York where the winters along w/ the salted roads to melt ice destroys the metal on rides, and in Puerto Rico where the salt in the air from the ocean rusts the rides all-over in time. Here in good old hot/dry Texas, the rides are quite clean and rust free in most cases. This '71 98 I have is a one owner Texas car, has 93,300 miles on it and was sitting f/ the past 10 years.
