improving performance on a 455

My Jetstar currently has a 455 from a 1975 Vintage vehicle along with an edlebrock 650 Carb. It seems to be lacking. When I start it up it is very cold blooded and a good hesitation for the first 10 min or so of driving (keep in mind this car sat unused and not started for the past 5 years) after the 10 min mark of driving it the Hesitation is completely gone. I step on the gas.. It goes.

My friend is recommending putting on a 750 Carb on the engine and says it will run lots better. The plugs and wires, Cap rotor were all put on new shortly before it was parked.

Any other ideas?

I am also looking at rebuilding the engine as well. I have 2 choices for this. I can rebuild the current one in the car or I have been offered a 455 that was removed from a 68 Toronodo. Which Would be a better engine to use and any recommendations for good performance.

Thanks
Jeff

What's up guys? I recently put a vacuum gauge on my motor to try and tune my new carb a little bit and I got some weird readings. I found a port on the manifold to hook up to and started her up. No matter where I put the gauge on the manifold it will read about 5 inches at idle and then when I accelerate the motor the vacuum will climb to about 15-17 inches. Now this is the exact opposite of what I've read that is supposed to happen. Out of curiosity I hooked up to the PCV on the carb and got the same results, as well as with the brake boost. Anyone have any clue as to what is going on here? Thanks.

whilst oversizing the drain back holes in the heads I have struck the adjacent head bolt hole . Is this a problem ?? Personally, I would have thought not as there nowhere the oil can go . I don`t know if it is the front or rear head bolt hole `cos , excuse the ignorance , the heads look kinda 'ambidextrous'.to me  and I don`t know the difference !!!Trust the engine builder knows
The holes were enlarged from 9.5 mm -close to 3/8"- to 11mm -close to 7/16 "
I have cleaned around the breakout , do I have to get a sleeve inserted or is all ok ??
Thanks

I have a few questions for you guys that have already, "Been there and done that".
History:
My vavle cover gasket began to leak a bit, tighening the bolts only helped for a little while. No biggie, last night I removed the valve covers.

I noticed at the corners of the head (where the oil drains back into the engine) was some type of plastic debris. After inspection, I realized that it was several pieces of an oil stem seal.

My Questions:
1 - My Engine doesn't smoke - Should I replace the valve stem seals now that I know at least one is missing?

2 - I bought new valve stem seals - Is it safe to say that the black seals are the exhaust side and the white are the Intake side?

3 - Should Olds 455 engines use Positive valve seals or Umbrella style seals?

4 - These new Umbrella type stem seals appear to just hang on the valve stem themselves. They don't snap onto the head or anything. - How do they wipe or meter the oil on the stem if they just float with the stem?

Hey guys,
I recently purchased a 1965 400 short block from 66-3X2 442. He helped me with the shipping which made it cost effective to buy it from him. I'm very pleased with the transaction and am now putting together an engine for my 1965 442. One question I came up against, his motor doesn't have a pilot bearing in it, but the back of the crank has a deeper hole than most of the automatic cranks I've seen. The center of the hole is about 0.80 deep. What I'm wondering is how deep must this hole be for the transmission input shaft to not hit the crank? I could put something together in the garage to try and figure it out, but hoped someone here might already know the depth needed?
John

Hi everyone, I'm new here. Just came across a '60 Super 88 and bought it on a whim because, well, you do that sometimes! Turns out the engine had been swapped at some point, and done in a pretty hokey way. Ever seen motor mounts made of a rubber block and two pieces of EMT electrical conduit before?! Haha.
So anyway, I need to:

(a) Identify this motor. (From photos I can find here and elsewhere online, it looks to me like a 394 from '63 or so? The stamping on the left side of the engine near the valve cover is H204574. There is also a casting number, 578510 on the right side exhaust manifold. I am attaching photos.)

and:
(b) I need to come up with a motor mount solution. Does anyone have any photos or diagrams of what the correct mount for this motor looks like? I think this would help me figure out how to mount this motor in the car. Would it be a good idea to start with the right mount for the engine and make some kind of block or brace to adapt it to the frame? Or adapt a '60 mount to fit the engine? Any ideas or direction anyone can offer would be really appreciated. Never had to do anything like this before but I'm game to make it work!
