I know typically this is an "open" between the dash and the sender - anyone know of "typical" things that go wrong with this particular car based on your experience? I know I need to check the resistance, I know the float could be stuck, but what I'm looking for is "Oh yeah...the (BLAH BLAH BLAH) is ALWAYS the problem on the 92s..."

If you disconnect the feed wire to the sender from the gauge and ground it, it will drive the gauge to read E with the key on. It's either a bad ground or sender.

Eric, this isn't answering his question. He already knows this. What he wants is someone to tell him, "Oh, all '92's do that. All you need to do is reattach the doohickey to the the thing-a-ma-bob, and the gauge will work."

I appreciate all input - I'm going to "Go In" this weekend with my multimeter. I was just looking to start off in the right direction is all.

I suspect the answer to my question is not out there.

Just the joys of trying to resurrect a 22 year old car that's been sitting in a garage for 10 years

Seriously, I've never used a meter, I just do as I explained above. Pretty simple to track down. Just take the wire off the doomefletchy and ground it with the key on. If the whatcha ma call it goes to E it's 99% of the time the doomefletchy thingy.
