Low Beam Headlights Cut Off

For several years the headlights on my '72 Cutlass have not been working properly. When I turn on my low beam headlights and then try to turn on the brights by hitting the dimmer switch, the low beam headlights go out on both sides and the high beam lights do not come on at all. Just the parking lights are on. Should I just replace the dimmer switch to see if that solves the problem? Also, how do I check the headlight bulbs to make sure they have not burned out?

All four high beams burned out at once? Not likely.

Check the connections from your high beam switch. If you can make them light by connecting the feed to the high beam line, then your problem is the switch.

It is remotely possible also to have a short in the high beam circuit that causes the headlight circuit breaker to open when the high beams are on.
Is there a delay from when you switch from highs back to lows?

If not, the dimmer switch should be the issue.
