Wiring Diagrams

Hey yall, I was wondering if someone could point me in the direction of different wiring diagrams for a 71 Cutlass. What I need mainly is headlights, taillights, and windshield wiper diagrams. I googled it, but all I was coming up with was full out diagrams of the entire car. Im no electrician and I can't understand what its saying haha.

Its saying the same thing a system specific wiring diagram would say. If you want to make it easier to follow use a marker and highlight the systems you are working to make them easier to follow.

X2.
I have not sen system-specific diagrams for these year cars. On the main foldout one, the wire routing is all over the place so you could not zoom in to just one certain area.

The good ones int he service manual are in color, making it pretty easy to read. I posted the 72 diag on the site - just search for "72 wiring diagram".

You can also go to AutoZone .com, Register on their web site, then go to repair and manuals, they have a pretty basic engine and chassis wiring diagrams for 70-72 cutlass. It shows the light wiring diagram

Question

So I got the diagrams off AutoZone.com, and they worked out pretty well for me. Only problem is my headlights and blinkers arent quite working out for me...

If your looking at the front of the car, headlight 1 doesnt work on lowbeams, yet headlight 4 does. When I put on highbeams all of the headlights come on.

|( 1 )( 2 ) =GRILL= ( 3 )( 4 )|

I tried switching a couple of wires around (some of the wires had been cut and retaped together, brutal I know), So I thought maybe one or 2 may be switched around. I still get the same issue. Any ideas on what that could be?

Also, When i put on my left blinker, it blinks really really slowly, like 5 seconds between blinks. Yet when I put on my right blinker, the right blink lights get slightly brighter. I checked all the bulbs, and connectors, everything seems to be in tact.

Brake lights, and running lights work fine. Any info is greatly appreciated

Start from scratch and check every wire in each sytem from start to finish checking continuity and resistance. Don't forget to also check the grounds for all the circuits as well.

You need to verify A that all the wires have good continuity from start to finish and B that they are all going exactly where they are supposed to be going.

That link shows the wiring schematic right out of the Olds Chassis service Manual. it's exactly the same for 71/72

Don't mean to sound too elementary, but I assume you verified the headlight itself is okay? Some forget that the low beam bulb has two separate filaments in it - one for low, one for high...

It could explain the headlight but not the turn signal issue.

I had this happen once too. Check your grounds really well, and make sure the sockets for the signals are good. My problem was a bad ground, but it wasn't the front light, it was in the back.

Hey thanks for the speedy responses guys! At work I was talking with a mechanic and thats exactly what he said, that the low filament was burnt out. I had no idea that these bulbs did both lol. Im still fairly new with cars, but I want to learn absolutely everything about them. I can tear down and rebuild a motor, but when it comes to wiring, im best at being electrocuted :P

Thanks for the info, I will try a new bulb out

Awesome find.

I bought mine from
http://classiccarwiring.com/
Big laminated 11x17" sheets double sided in color.

IMHO while you're in there you should install 2 relays in there for the hi and low beams.
Run power directly to them from either the horn relay, or the battery and your headlight
brightness will increase quite a bit giving them true 14 volts instead of ~ 11 volts.
http://www.madelectrical.com/electri...adlights.shtml

BTW - Relays are like $5 ea @ Radio Shack......cheap mod to get brighter headlights.

I am guessing they run all four on high because of their small physical size.

Stay dry and keep hands off of the coil and the spark plug wires when the engine is running and there will be no electrocution. 12V wont shock you under normal circumstances. Now if you get a short somewhere there WILL be some sparks flying. The bigger the fuse the bigger the sparks!

I got a set of Wagner halogens at a local parts shop for 8 bucks each. They work great!

I might add. Don't do what BlueVista did while trying to find a battery that would fit the Delco repo battery cover. Don't measure the distance between you battery post with a metal ruler. It'll give ya the Don King hairdo.

When working around the battery with metal tools, it is best to keep an extra pair of clean underwear handy...

Shock you, no. Scare the #$@& out of you, yes.

X2 on putting in a relay between the lights and the switch. It's pretty cheap and it makes a huge difference in the headlights.

x3

Painless wiring makes really nice headlight kits specifically for this type of thing.
