Did you re-install the linkage between the trans and steering column to activate the reverse light switch on the column/lock the shifter when in park with the column??
Where's your neutral safety switch? Here's an illustration from the '71 assembly manual. The regular or dual gate consoles require a different shift lever on the trans, same as the regular column shift auto but with a tab for the shifter linkage/cable. I had the same problem in my 70 Supreme after switching to a console. I had to turn the portion of the steering column by hand to get the reverse lights to go on. I didn't bother trying to reconnect the column shift linkage as I figured for the few times that I actually needed the reverse lights I could just do it by hand.
