Fuel gauge or sender ?

How can I find out if my fuel gauge or sender is bad on my 80 olds cutlass ? Ran out of gas and the gauge was 1/2 way between empty and 1/4. Thank You

My guess that is the problem...I have the same thing on my station wagon. There are ways to test it but from what I've learned it's usually the sending unit that goes bad...especially if your gauge works for the most part just doesn't go down all the way. It probably means the float is going bad and is not adjusting properly. I've bought a new one and am going to replace it next time I get low on gas
