1973 olds 98 windsheild washer pump

Last night i took apart the whole pump assemble because it was not pumping fluid.. I found that the lever that moves back and fourth was sticking so it was not letting it go over far enough to grab hold of the wheel which pumps...I cleaned everything and regreased it,,put it back together and it does work now..When i push the mist button it activates solenoid which pulls a metal clip up and the lever grabs ahold of the wheel and the pump starts pumping...My question is after it cycles once and the clip falls back down to block the lever from turning the pump wheel the lever continues to go back in fourth which I assume is normal because the clip keeps it from engaging the wheel...The problem is its making a clanking noise...Is this normal,,,Should the lever always cycle back and fourth or should it totally disengage and not move when the pump is not activated....I hope this make since...
