1951 oldsmobile 88 deluxe

Hello, I'm new to this but I Love old cars. I recently bought a 51 olds 88 from a guy moving out of state for $2500 and thought I got a steal! The car runs great and I took it in to get it looked over mechanically. The only thing they said was it has a transmission leak and it needed a new fuel pump and I got that done. The car doesn't drive good like it did before i took it in. I returned it to them 2 times and they didn't know what to do. I figure they don't know shit and got mad and they ran me out of the shop. I don't know who to turn to or trust with the issues. Someone please help. here are some pics. Shes a beauty!

well now the car misses, It puts and spits in low gear. It ran perfect when i bought it. It might be because the carb is dirty or from all the old sediment in gas tank. They did replace the fuel pump because it was rotted. Does that sound right? What do i do?

Did they change the fuel filter when the installed the new fuel pump. If not that might be your problem.

Welcome to the world of old cars. The 54 I have helped a friend with did pretty much the same thing. We had the tank flushed, the carb rebuilt and the car tuned and running pretty good. We have and electric fuel pump near the tank. Then the car just quit when it was in my garage. We had a clear fuel filter and I could see it was dirty. Long story short, the old fuel line had rust in it. The rust was breaking loose and clogging the filter. This happened after the car had been driven some. I would double check the fuel pump they put on the car. Chances are it has been on the shelf a long time and the diaphram may have dry rotted and cracked.

When these things get really old, they can do some strange things.

bumper

yeah, i just put the rear bumper on yesterday. I'm missing the piece of body between the bumper and the trunk though. There is a big gap and it looks stupid. What is that called and where can i find something like that. Could I just have one fabricated out of sheet metal?

You MIGHT be able to get the bumper filler from Fusicks. I am not sure if they carry parts for cars that old. BTW, that is a beautiful car.

At $2500 I think you got a hell of deal. I paid a lot (3x) more for my 49, congrats. On your missing problem, you might check for a vaccum leak.
