Have you tried installing a 400 cam and 400 heads on the engine? This might add some horses.

My 76 Cutlass had the original olds 350. We pulled for rebuild and stuck a comp 360 cam, bored over 60 with higher compression pistons. If I remember right they were 9 to 1. Top it off with Edelbrock performer carb and left the stock 680 cfm carb on it. Replaced stock exhaust with dual 3 to 2 1/4 out. That was running 241 hiway gears. If you can do this and not that expensive than you should get by with 33's in the rear end and will get what you are looking for.

I dont think a shift kit will mess with your rear gear. A shift kit should just make you shift harder.
