1984 Delta 88 automatic transmission

Ok...there is a drip of transmission fluid coming from, I think, the bolt head at the bottom of the "pan." It is right under the transmission. Is it a drain?

Is there a special gasket for that bolt? I was told there is a copper one and it may have been re-used.

Is the pan removable with no problem if the gasket just needs to be replaced? I mean, if I am going to change the fluid anyway I wouldn't want the guts to fall out.

Thanks again

You could have any one of a number of transmissions in that car. Since I don't know what you have, I can't tell you if you've got a drain plug and gasket or not. And it's always possible that someone added one. You can remove the pan without fear. Nothing will fall out.

Thanks Oldsfan. I am not sure about the type of transmission, it is mated with a 307 V8.

Hmm, have to check mine and see which bolt you're talking about and will get back to you.

Anyway, I have been having a problem with my transmission. It will not shift to Reverse when the car is first started but will shift into Drive, 2 and 1 normally. However, after the car is driven (at least 3-4 miles) and then stopped, it shifts normal into Reverse. Just wondering what this sympton indicate and how big of a problem could it be down the road if not immediately remedied.

Thanks in advance for all info. I'm in the process of determining my transmission type but like yours, I have a 307 Vin Y engine.

Anyway, hope you don't mine if I posted this on your thread (instead of starting another one).

Guys, there should be a label in the trunk on the underside of trunk lid, called an RPO or SPID label. All kinds of 3 digit codes on there. Transmission codes start with M. Send me your M codes and I can tell you what model trans you have.

MV9 is the code for a 200C - 3 speed, no overdrive. I do not see a drain plug in the pan. Somebody might have added one, which is good sign, because that means they drained the fluid regularly.
