1953 Oldsmobile Pinion problems

I`m looking for an answer to my problem: I took off the pinion yoke, old pinion seal to replace with a new one but laying in there was a very long spring! What is it and where does it go? Its broken in half and I am sort of assuming it held the pinion bearing in place....Humn, I dont know what to do and need help, please!

You DO realize that asking this question in a thread about a Type O axle, in a Cutlass forum, is NOT the best way to get an answer about a 53 Olds axle. I moved your post to it's own thread. Good luck.

If it were a long spring about 1/8" in diameter, it came from the lip of the pinion seal.
