Rear end upgrade advice

I have a 72 cutlass with a rebuild 350,700r4 trans and a untouched rear end. I'm assuming that I have 2:73 gears since its stock?? I want to upgrade but unsure what to get. I plan to drive car out of town and show off a little at red light. I never plan to take it to the track. Any ideas??

I have a 350 with a 200R4. I just put in 3.73 posi gears. They work really good. They give you a good launch off the line and will still cruise ok at highway speeds. I had a 3.08 posi prior and they were good to. Not too bad off the line and would cruise at 70 mph all day long.

I had a 2.7x rear in my car I went to a 3:42. At 70 mph I'm about 3200 rpms w 255-60-15 tires. I don't take my car to the track I just like driving it and getting on it. If you have an OD trans I would recommend 3:42 or higher, w no OD I wish my hi way rpms were lower, so I would recommend 3:23 or lower. Current trans in my car is a th350 future plans are MT 4 or 5 speed.

Yah witht h e over drive your killing the performance with that 2.73 gear... you need at least 3.42 - 3.73 is more fun for light to light action and 1st to second gear snappy shifts.

DO REMEMBER: If you car is not tuned correctly or just plain tired and old etc.... all the gear in the world will only band aid those troubles.

my 2 cents

For how you plan to use the car with the existing OD trans and the 8.5" diff your choice is 3.73 or 3.90 gears. Pick one & get after it.

If you aren't familiar with building a rear, contact 507Olds (Brian Trick) or Monzaz. Both frequent this site and offer such services.

I plan on having the car tuned soon. I was leaning towards the 3.42 but I'm still not unsure yet.
