Differential ID, please!

Hi guys,

New guy here.

I've got a '68 442 that has the wrong rear end under it. I've located an olds 12/10 and wanted to see if I could get some help IDing it before I go look at it this weekend. I was hoping for something in the 3s, since it's going under a 4 speed car. If these gears are too tall, how big of a ring can I get in this one? I've read that it's not that easy to swap gears between the low and tall rears.

It looks like the pinion is 14 teeth from the pics the owner sent me above. That would make it a 2.78?

Couple of specific questions:

Is that too tall for a 4 speed? (I do want to ENJOY it after all)

Can I get a 3.42 on that carrier, or is the carrier spacing too tight?

If I buy all new gears and a posi unit from http://www.supercarsunlimited.com I'll be in it for $1400 before getting someone to put it all together.

Thoughts?

Rear-end gearing swap

I currently have an open carrier 3.23 set on my '68 442. I'm swapping in a set of 3.42 gears on a NIB 588 anti-spin carrier. In my case, I watched and waited and watched and eventually located the NIB 588 carrier. Then more watching and waiting eventually turned up a set of NIB Richmond Olds 3.42 gears. I will have to machine the back side of the ring gear, but other than that they will fit.

You are correct Supercars wants a lot of money for their setup. There are a couple of drive train specialist members here on C.O. I'm betting you can get into an anti-spin setup for a lot less than what Supercars wants, if you work with Jim (monzaz) or Bryan (507Olds). They are both great guys and very knowledgeable.

I think last week someone else here on CO was selling some 3.23 and another person a set of 3.42 gears. They may still have them. Check the Parts for Sale forum.

Good Luck!

Rear is a 12 bolt olds with 2.78 ratio ...Can not see if it is open or anti spin...
You can not fit the 3.42 Richmond on the 2.78 carrier you need a 3 series carrier for it to properly fit. You can get a machinist to make you a ring gear spacer of about .150 thick you could use the 2 series carrier than. Jim

Thanks for the tip. I'll keep an eye out. I'm picking the diff up for $200. Not bad, even if it is too tall for 4 speed fun.

Why are you upgrading from 3.23 to 3.42? Does that make that big of a difference? I hope 2.78 is remotely drive able with a 4 speed while I start my hunt...

It's open, unfortunately. I knew there was something different about the carriers. Will a 3.23 fit a series 2 carrier? The shim moves the ring closer to the pinion, right? If that's the case, isn't the pinion larger on the lower gears?

I'm easily confused...

Upgrade

I'm going to the 3.42 because it is a little more responsive/fun when nailing the Go Pedal to the floor, Also (and probably really) because when I located and bought them, they were the only set available (at that time) that would fit the 588 anti-spin carrier that was/is eagerly waiting to be installed. In the meantime, I'm keeping my eyes peeled for a 671 (I think that is the correct carrier, off the top of my head - I'll have to review) that I can put my OEM 3.23 ring gear onto.

I got a quote from super cars with all new components for $1200... but then I gotta pay someone to install it. I've read if you do it wrong it's a real pain. Ug.

yES THE FLANGE FOR THE RING MOVES CLOSER TO THE CENTER LINE OF THE PINION. less TEETH ON THE PINION MAKES FOR SMALLER DIAMETER AND THE RING are all different thicknesses. NO MATTER what...You can not interchange ring and pinions. They are a match set.
11 and 41 always have to stay together...
You can not take a 12 41 and swap the 41 tooth rings. IT JUST DOES NOT WORK THAT WAY.

Some 41 tooth rings are thicker and thinner depending on the ratio.

Your 3.23 will not normally fit the 2.78 carrier...BUT again get a spacer and you can. Jim

Yah,, Same deal here 925.00 (EATON posi, 3.42 or 3.90 ratio and master rebuild kit) With out axle bearings and seals no shipping cost either.... I do not normally list prices as they do go up over time so please when referencing this amount remember it will be dated. Jim

There are 2 different axle bearing systems

Oiled bearings 1970
sealed bearing system is usually 67 68 69 era.

Challenging

I understand the process is cumbersome ensuring you have correct shimming/spacing in three dimensions. Sometimes folks have to make several attempts at it to get it correct. Fortunately, I have the information and parts provided by Brian and Jim, and will have the help of a local buddy who has done several gear changes, etc. If all goes well with my current schedule I hope to have the rearend completed before August is done. I'm keeping my fingers crossed against the gremlins!
