A few problems here ^@#&^$

Ok so I have all my wiring issues worked out. If you missed my post before I had a couple of wires burn up becaused they rubbed on the firewall. So I picked up a new harness out of the same year and make and most of the same options. But, here is my list of problems and what I think thye are, correct me if I am off track.

Wiper motor does the 3 inch shuffle. I am thinking it is the motor but might be the switch. The wipers work on low and hi, but I have no pump, replaced the seals but no go.

My gas gauge goes way over to the right, way past the full mark. I just replaced the sender so I am guessing the guage is getting too much voltage or signal if you will.

My gen light and my brake light are on, only when I turn on my headlights. I am thinking it is a bad light switch or the guage is toast. Not sure on this one.

My center console will not light up. Is it supposed to light up when you open the doors? I was thinking the door jamb switch????

I dont expect a car that is almost 40 to be perfect, but I'd like to try and get here a close as possible.

Thanks for any direction.

Wiper shuffle: it is the motor according to Joe, he has verified that in a related post just a few days ago.

Gas gauge: is it possible the connector is on backwards or is it murphy proof? I think you may be correct about wrong signal. I think it is ground that makes the gauge work, a varying resistance (through the sender in the tank) to ground (the tank). Did the gauge work with the first harness? If so, then it is definitely the new harness. If you don't have a wiring diagram you really need to get one. It will identify the exact wire by color and even possibly by connector pin number (second from left on back of dash connector as an example). Then you can go troubleshoot the problem, you may have inherited a problem that was in the donor car to begin with and never corrected. Look for stray ground.

Gen and brake lights: Not sure about those but probably a similar situation as the gauge. A good wiring diagram will be the tool you need most.

Center console: are you talking about the storage compartment light or the backlights that should be on when the dash lights are on? If the former, look for a small switch near the hinge of the compartment lid. If the latter, they should be on when the dash lights are on, look for a wire that is not connected. Again, the wiring diagram will help.

Good luck.

THanks for the info! I am talking about the lights at the front and back of the console. I thought they only came on when the doors were open. Are they supposed to be on when the lights are on??? Cool! HAd no idea lol

I feel your pain. My gas gauge worked great till it pegged full one day last week, my wipers only have 1 speed and do the shuffle on high and off, and last nite my factory tach needle is struck dead nuts at 4k. If you dont have the factory service manual get one, show how to troubleshoot all the issues.

I had heard that the gas guage issue is an open ground at the tank sender.

An online manual of the 1966 is available here, BUT there will be many differences with your '69.

The wiring diagram in the electrical section may help you identify the gas gauge wiring, as it is similar. However I think the tank sender went to 90 Ohms around 69 or 70 though.

The best advice to anyone restoring an old car is to get a printed service manual for your year and model to guide you along in all aspects of your project. It is worth the cost.

I just picked up a manual for $20... very sweet book. I will try to get at all the problems and let ya know what I come up with. Also, I am looking at buying a set of #5 heads. Guy wants $200 for the pair.... is that fair??

They look very clean but I will have them done anyway.
