Need Info on 69 Cutlass!!

Hey guys....need some of you to lend your expertise. I am trying to research on my own but wanted to drop this here and see what I get. A friend of mine recently came across what he was told was a 1969 Oldsmobile. He has seen the car but all he knows is that it is a 2 door hardtop, has "cutlass" on the fender, and the air cleaner says 455 Police Engine (or something to that affect). So far in my short bit of research it seems the engine package in question was only in the 70 model and the 69 big blocks were 400s. Anyhow, thats all I know to this point. I only have room for one car and am considering getting this one and moving my 70 cutlass S. Any input is greatly appreciated.

You are correct. 1968-1969 Cutlass/442 models only had the 400 c.i. engine available. The 455 didn't show up until 1970. Not sure what questions you have on the '69's but a good place to get information is www.69olds.com.

Was looking through my Olds parts manual and it does have a listing for police packages in 1970. Sorry it's not more comprehensive.

Any chance you could get a picture of the air cleaner with that decal? I've never heard of one like that. If it's an original it would be great for a history file.

It takes one wingnut to swap air cleaners. How about posting some casting numbers from the block? I'm a card carrying cynic who bets the engine is painted gold.

Joe you are absolutely right. I am skepitcal myself but if I get this car it may be for near to nothing. My friend told me this guy was going to give him the car but my friend is a corvette guy rather than an olds guy. Now that it's a friend of a friend kinda thing who knows.

As for the numbers game you can bet I'll be going over all of that once I lay MY eyes on it which I hope to do in the next week or two. I'll let everyone know what I find out. Thanks for all your input.

My book also shows a "W-33 Police Perf. Package" for a 455 in 1970. I wonder what the "B07 Police Apprehender- Highway Patrol" is? Maybe the engine is a transplant or maybe the guy saw the The Blues Brothers movie and had to have a "Cop" air cleaner lid.

Turns out my buddy got it wrong and it's not a Cutlass. It's a 1969 Delta 88 with the police package in it. Not sure I'll be interested in it but any information would be appreciated. Am waiting to get more information from the owner.

I guess it is all personal preference but I would love to have a 69 delta 88, and the police package, and it could be cheap-free. The price is right.

I'm an A body guy....just love the "muscle" car look. As for the price, unfortunately the owner has taken note of the attention we've given to the car. My buddy now tells me he doesn't believe the car can be gotten for free. We're still gonna get all the pertinent information on this car. Will let everyone know what we find out.

If it's the original engine, then it should be a high compression, C-head 455. Not a bad starting point.

I would bet it is pretty rare to have a Delta 88 with "Cutlass" on the fenders.

Obviously my buddy was mistaken in this regard.

Im just kiddin, of course.

However, my brand new 89 GMC pickup was delivered with a Chevy steering wheel. The salesman couldn't figure out why I wanted the dealership to replace it with the correct wheel.

I have heard of that package before. I believe that would be a good engine to acquire and I have no prejudice towards the B bodies. If I were back in the tidewater area I would jump on it. If you have any room at all save it for someone here on C.O. You could probably make a little money for your troubles and another Olds enthusiast could have a really cool piece of Olds history for a fair price, even if the guy decides he wants a couple hundred for it now.

Well it looks like, for now at least, that this is a dead issue. We haven't heard from the owner and since I'm not personally interested in the car my buddy isn't pressing the issue. I would love to have the engine as well but it was my understanding the guy didn't want to get rid of the car for someone to "part it out". It was his Mom's car and he would like to see it restored, otherwise he was just gonna store it away in has barn. Anyhow, if the issue ever comes back to life I'll put the word out.

Hey Oldsguy.....Tidewater huh? Been a while since you were here hasn't it. Tidewater is old-school.....they call it Hampton Roads now. Don't ask me why.
