a/c question
my a/c makes cold air but you can only feel it 8-10" from the vent could it be the fan? or compressor? wanted to ask you guys before i went ripping into it because this heat wave is giving me heat stroke!!

See if you get more forceful air from a different vent in a different mode. If you can then it is the door actuators for the dash that are not opening fully, if you cannot then you may have a bad blower motor or bad resistor block.

I had the same thing happen on a '91 Ciera. Turned out the fins on the evaporator were clogged with dirt.
This was a long time ago, but I recall it was a huge PITA to get at the evaporator in order to clean it. The evaporator sits very high on the firewall. I had a 6-cylinder car- I think the power steering pump had to come off in order to remove the evaporator cover. Chuck Last edited by Starfire61 : 06-12-2008 at 05:36 AM. |

The first thing I would do is run a temporary jumper wire from the +12V terminal on the battery directly to the power terminal on the motor (be sure you have the power terminal and not the ground terminal). This is the highest speed for the motor and if you now get proper flow, then there's a problem in the switch or the speed control resistor. You should also be able to hear the motor running at full speed. If not, then there is probably a problem with the motor. If the motor runs but there's still no air, you may have a plugged evaporator or you may have a problem with the vacuum actuators for the air doors in the box under the dash.

Or, the motor may work but the impeller has broken off the shaft. My experience is that most of the impellers are plastic and held in place with a lock washer on the end of the shaft which has a keyway on it.

Yup. I've had that happen too. In my case, however, the loose fan made one heck of a racket.

Forget what everyone else said. They don't know what they are talking about. Your problem is obviously STARVATION!
Yep, that's right. STARVATION! How long has it been since you fed the squirrle that powers the fan? If he doesn't have any food then how do you expect him to run inside of his cage? I suggest you buy some squirrle food from the pet store and drop it into the air plenum through your uppermost vent. Give it a day or two and see if he gets better. You might want to pour some water down the vent too. Just incase he is thirsty. ![]()

My squirrel is dead. This explains the foul odor, as well...
I guess I did not see the feeding and watering guidelines in the FM... Oh well, at least replacements could be had easily in my own yard! ![]() I guess I will need to rig up a nut-injection system to feed him. The condensate water will automatic as is... ![]() ![]() ![]()

You know, Joe mentioned the speed control resistor. I recall Oldsguy and I had to hunt one of those down for his 76 Olds 98 Regency. I think we bought one from the salvage yard and had to exchange it a few times because the ones we were getting were bad as well.
