Wilkommen.

thanks for your response!!!
Yeah, sometimes im drivin it on the autobahn, but only, i think it must be about 70 to 80 miles per hour (120 kmh)

By the way i have a question about the rebuilding of my small block:

summit has got the forged engine kit (here the link:http://store.summitracing.com/partde...0&autoview=sku

i want to know, if i could use this kit with my #7 headS???
I cant find out everything about it, what heads that i could use with this kit , because of "piston to valve distance"??? or compression funcionality?!?
In germany the parts for oldsmobile are horrible expensive :-((and to find out some facts is harder, as to crack the jackpot if you know what i mean..
Here are the facts i know:
Stock 1971 OLDS rocket 350 5,7 V8 4bbl orig. (now Holley 4bbl #4160 600cfm) with a compression ratio of 8,5:1 (says 442.com)
Edelbrock performer intake(new), HEI Distributor with coil on top (new)
Dynomax Full lenght headers with some custom 2 1/2 dual exhaust
The heads says #7 with 409147 in the middle of the head

on my rebuild i want to take in it:
Comp Cams k kit high energy 268h
Comp Cams Roller Tip Rockers 1441 kit
Melling Hi Volume oil pump with driveshaft and pickup
New Fuelpump
Maybe some new valves if i could find out what size i do have... and if i any one find, who has this valve sizes....
442.com gives two available sizes, they are INTAKE: 1.995 and 1.880
EXHAUST 1.624 and 1.567 which size do i have????
And at minimum i want to change the piston rings and bearings etc
But if i could use this kit above, i will take this for my low compression:-((
Can you please help me out, or if anyone of you has put in such a kit, can me tell his expierience with that ....

Thanks a lot
Torsten

Gee I wonder why?

I was just at Don from Rocket Racing's house 2 weeks ago, great guys up there in the land of cheese.
One of my motors just so happens to be at RR right now.

This guy is in Germany though.... Might be a slight budget breaker with shipping.

He is well aware of the costs involved and, to a lesser extent, so am I.

That's why he should do it right the first time.

Welcome! 7 heads are good street heads. If you have a machine shop near by, get the heads milled maybe ,010-,020. If you replace the pistons, 0 deck the block. Boost your cr a bit.

Mill the heads ,010-,020 based on the fact that factory gaskets were about ,010 thick and new ones are between about ,028 and as thick as .039. That's that's ,018-,029 thicker.
0 deck the block with any piston he may use, even a factory piston may be ,010 or more in the hole. If you 0 deck, you gain back some valuable compression. Even at an advertised (not sure) 9,x:1 factory cr, you probably won't have that with the new head gaskets, you can make some of it up by milling off someof the difference on the heads and then 0 decking the block. Then you SHOULD be around where you were. If you were to go with flat tops or anything with a smaller cc, then you do have to be careful as to how far you can mill before you exceed 10:1, you don't really want to go over that because it won't be happy on pump gas.

Sorry I didn't elaborate before.

Mine are .02"+ below the deck. How much power can I expect to gain, if I zero decked my block?

What would be optimal compression for his particular application?

thanks guys,
i dont want to build trouble in here.....

I actually want to change my cam lifters etc. >> i must pull the block out...
so my opinion was to change the piston rings if that is necessary...
i dont want to do something that is not really really necessery, because i yesterday lost my job and that s*cks me down!!! :-((
But i want to do it right if i have the money !!!

I still have about 6 months to work rock around the clock ( if i find a job as fast i can get) to do the best and right job for my baby.
I just want to gain some expierience, tips etc. till to my rebuild.
And i want to thank everybody who gives me helpful tips for that..

I dont want to put a camshaft in and the next step is to buy a new engine in cause of wrong engine rebuildung, i think you know what i mean ...
As i said if i have the money i will bring it to a machine shop here.
Again thanks guys for pickin me up here professional

Torsten,

Welcome to our site. I looked at the v8brothers site and it looks pretty nice. Too bad there aren't any pictures of the Oldsmobile engines . Maybe you could fix that soon, hmmmm? I believe if you are careful and patient as you seem to be by the language in your posts, that you will be able to build your engine without making any mistakes. Finding a machinist whom you can trust will be very important. Good luck to you.

Thannks oldsguy

our 73 camaro is going to do a 383 stroke right now but he let all the work do a machine shop and he has taken no photos or so ...

If you want to see the 68 c10 rebuild, click on the car, go to diary and watch the pages ... sean is from oregon and came with the army, i think in 85, to germany. we are all in the same woodworking firm... but im not anymore since yesterday :-(((

I will do a detailled photo set thru my engine rebuild so you can take a look, and i, can look for some screws that i have more after, than before..:-))

See you Guys

PS: On my birthday i got the rocket emblem tattooed on my back...
Maybe i ll post a pic if i got a nice shot...:-)))
I KNOW THATS CRAZY BUT I LOVE MY OLDS!!!!!

Ok, I understand that you are trying to weed out the good info from the bad. What I'm trying to do is SUGGEST, this is his build, his money, his car. He makes the decisions, I would NEVER take anything info on a forum as 100% correct until it's been coraberated by someone who I know and trust. I take no offense to your questioning, whether intended or not, but I hope you can understand what I'm trying to get across.

88coupe is just making sure I don'g give you improper advice. He's just filtering out some stuff. I know, I don't intend to argue, just a discussion.

Back to the subject at hand. That is a nice car and a nice motor. Just curious, was that car imported by gm, or a previous owner?

It's refreshing to get a mature reply, instead of a personal attack/flame. Might be the first time it has ever happened.

You are trying to “suggest” a route, to an unknown destination, without knowing the starting point.

Starting point, is the condition of the engine being discussed. Destination, is the intended goal. Since they were not yet defined, your posts were not only confusing, but nonproductive.

Rebuild. A “build” might be discussed in the “Hardcore” section of ROP.

To say anything else, would be ludicrous.

Hopefully, his will be informed decisions, based on accurate information. Information from someone who knows the condition of the engine, his goal, and how to achieve it.

What a fine world this would be, if everyone had the same philosophy. Unfortunately, some forum visitors actually follow the erroneous advice they are given. For example, the “urban legends” that are still being kept alive by “knowledgeable” Olds enthusiasts.

It is, pretty much up to us, to police ourselves.

Take offense? To do so, would be immature. Questions are what lead to discussions, and discussions lead to the advancement of knowledge. Which, is why we are here.

All I see, is only one of many forum members, who post (with “good” intentions) bogus replies to honest questions. The consequences do not matter, because the intentions are good.

When technical issues, such as these, need to be discussed, there can be no argument. By their nature, they must be discussed when they are introduced.

Any time an "argument" erupts, it is started by someone who (to be charitable) has been misinformed.
