where to find vin # breakdown

I'm new to the forum and would appreciate someone advising me where I can find out what the various individual numbers and letters mean in a specific vin number. I looked in the search section and didn't find anything specific, and ordered a catalog from year one thinking I'd find it there, but again, no luck. I'm trying to find out all I can about a Cutlass with this #3366F8M278564. The owner gave me this # calling it a serial # so I'm not positive it is in fact a vin.

I think it is a 1968 Cutlass convertible? with a V8 Built in Lansing Michigan. I know the vin breakdowns are in the chassis service manual but loaned mine to a friend. There shouldn't be a letter where the F is in the body code, should be a number unless it is something not in the books. I figure it's a convertible but could be a 4 door or vista cruiser with the 6 first in the body code. I linked to a site with breakdowns if you want to try and figure it out. Hope this helps.

Thanks for responding. It is an '86 convertable and I was in error with putting the "F" in the #. It is a 7. Sorry for the mistake. I have some classic Ch%#ys, but have never owned a classic Olds, so I'm having to learn about them from scratch. There seems to be less info available about the Olds than the others, but I'm looking forward giving it a try.

I've found this decoder to have more accurate details in several cases.
