Wheel Color
Can anyone tell me what the correct wheel color is for a 69 cutlass s converible? The car had SS1s painted body color, but I read that the wheels in 68/69 were originally argent. Does anyone know? Im going to be painting a set of ssIIIs for it in the next few days

Yes, I've heard the same thing too. I have a set of 14X6 argent grey wheels that came on a 1968 442, then the spare tire for my 1970 is mounted on a wheel painted argent grey where the rest of the wheels are Burgandy Mist like the car. I don't know when the factory started using the body color for the wheels but I suspect a lot of people painted their wheels to match the car as it looked nice. You mentioned your using SSIII wheels with the snap on center cap. They will still look nice, but if you want the original look you might want to locate some SSII with the bolt on center cap before going to the expense of painting them. Just my thoughts... John

If memeory serves, the 68 was Argent with NO trim at all. Then 69 was Argent with the trim. There may have been an option to have them the body color as early as 69, but became the standard (except for the chrome ones) in 1970.
You mentioned that the SSI's you have are painted??? That is odd. They are supposed to be polished with matte black painted around the lug areas. Do they look good? I have ONE 14 X 6 SSII wheel. It appears to be straight and true. It would be the correct one for your car. I do not own a 68/69 and don't ever plan to own one. PM me if interested. I will sell outright or trade for it. I need a good set of SSII centers. John |

What is "right" for your car depends on what was ordered.
SS I - Chrome SS II - Argent SS III - Body color And, of course, hubcaps.

maybe need to be clearer
Guys, thanks for the info. I may have my SS #s screwed up. I have 14x6 painted steel rallys as I call them on the car now. I purchased 15x7 ssIIIs with the push in cap off another member of this site. I wanted/needed them because Im doing a disc brake conversion and I read that my 14" drum brake wheels wont work with disc. I found a couple pictures of a 69 with argent wheels and it looks nice. Still not sure if body color or argent looks better with dark blue. Any opinions?
