wont come out of park

My sons 86 cutlass supreme SL would not come out of park. I took off the counsell area and disconected the relay that is attached. Now he can shift out of park but then I noticed he does not have reverse lights. Are the reverse lights and this relay I disconected related, or did he probably not have reverse lights to begin with???

Thanks,
Tod

There should be a switch connnected to the linkage inside the console which detects when the linkage is put into reverse. The wiring should be with the same harness which activates the neutral start switch. Maybe you should put that all back together after replacing the neutral start switch (which I think is the relay you are refering to). I am not really sure how the tranny on those newer cars works as I only have experience with the TH350/400 and their linkages. But, you may need to do that.
