Some great systems out there . I am wondering and too cold and lazy to go out in the shop and crawl on the creeper to look but................
Why not have mufflers mounted as far back as possible ? Is there no room ?
I would think it makes sense to have them rear mounted for flow reasons as well as weight reasons not to mention sound ?
Anyone tried this ? Or am I off my rocker ?

I'm not sure that having the mufflers further back than stock makes a difference one way or the other, except that it lets you put coffee can mufflers on your ricer. As for the 64-72 A-body cars, the gas tank is under the trunk floor and there is just about enough room to route the tail pipes on either side of the tank. There really isn't much room for mufflers there.

Thanks Joe thats pretty much what I recall from my Chevelle days .
I think a glasspack might work but then the sound my be a bit much.
And no rice burner "cans" for this guy !

The extra distance allows the gases to cool more. Cooler gases = less pressure = less volume = less restriction = lower sound pressure level.

But, the actual gain would be hard to measure.

Well I went under the car last night (32 degrees in the shop) and there is very little room for mufflers (as we already knew!) UNLESS I open the side of the trunk a few inches and that just dont feel right . OR.........
build some custom mufflers that are sized for that area . Cant hang down
much at all or it will look like crap . I like a challenge.
