New eBay scam, At least new to me

Had a situation where I had an item for sale and early in the listing it got a bid and soon after it got another bidder that went higher than I thought it was worth. About 2 hours before the item ended they contacted me to have me delete there bid because now they don't have the money.

I did not know how to delete a bidders bid so I Googled it. I guess there are people that have two accounts and use the second account to bid the amount higher than it is worth and then try to have there bids canceled just before the end of the auction. This way other people just pass it by and don't think about it because the price is to high. When the high bidder gets his bids deleted they end up having a very low bid on there other account because it will go back to the lowest bid before the other bidder got involved.

I think I understand it but not sure I am explaining it well. If someone contacts you to cancel there bid don't do it. eBay shows that they need to do it there self.

sounds like a lot of work..

theres software in place to prevent same owner shill bidding with multiple screen names..as long as they are using the same IP..but if you think that happened call ebay and report both screen names and let them do the work, they will, they love that stuff...right in the rules it says no multi names bidding on the same item..keep track of screen names, they can do the research on their end

I have never had it happen to me but I have heard of it. Totally correct you should not cancel their bid, they should do it themselves. If they aren't willing to do that report them to Ebay.

Eric, So why did the bidder contact you to cancel the high bid if they can cancel the (high) bid themselves?

Someone might catch on if the bidder is constantly withdrawing his bid on items. Therefore if he gets the seller to cancel, he is able to continue much longer before drawing red flags.

Now that you say that, I think I did read that.

Lesson learned; sad that you have to constantly expect the unexpected.

Thanks for alerting us, I will keep an eye out for that if I do a regular auction. At least with "Buy it now" they can't pull that.

Good to know. It's a bummer that some people do things like that.

If that happens, and you have the time, you can always "end the auction early" so that low bidder cant win the item.

Or just put in a 'Reserve Price'. That way you don't have to worry about your item selling too cheaply.

This is different but I was watching a 67 W30 breather on Ebay a week or so ago. There was a reserve which was not met. Before auction ended Ebay sent me a mail to hurry and bid as time was running out and told me the reserve price was 1000 dollars. I could be wrong but I did not see the reserve price listed in the auction. It seems Ebay is disclosing reserve prices to potential bidders??? Strange to me.... The item did meet reserve and sold.

Yep, just happened to me. Selling my 62 Futura. A guy had bid it up several hundred dollars overnight then sent me a message this morning saying he had left his computer on with my listing up and that his 6 yr old son had bid it up. He wanted me to retract his bid. I told him he had to retract his own bid. He told me he had contacted ebay and they said that I have to do it. I followed that up with a polite message telling him that I found that extremely hard to believe and that I would just go ahead and report these problems to ebay. Within 60 seconds he was miracuosly able to retract his own bid!! Imagine that...

I was closely following an auction for a 442 convertible in So California recently and decided not to bid when I noticed once guy with 74 bid retractions in the last 6 months! How in the hell does eBay allow that account to remain active?

Sure enough the bidding ended above a realistic value for that car. I come to find out it did not sell to the highest bidder. No surprise there.
