Driving tunes
So I'm sitting here playing tunes off Jango for the kids to dance to, and running across some killer tunes to drive to. Maybe It's just me and what I do for a living, but I'm thinking I'm not alone having a few that just kind of give that mental imagery of a bulivard cruise, backroad barnstorming, or maybe a kamakasi run down the big road where the zipperline becomes nearly solid.
![]() Ted Nugent stranglehold satriani ride styx blue collar man great white rock me A slew of others come to mind. My question is simply this. What is your favorite driving tune, The one that would probably get you busted when your not paying attention to your driving . You know the one that makes you when you hear it, or the hammer starts to drop...You know the one. So spill...What's your fave?

Kiss "Detroit Rock City" Most Judas Priest and of all things Gordon Lightfoot (another Canadien artiste par excellence!)

The number one all time song that makes my right foot turn to lead and the red mist form in my eyes is Highway Star by Deep Purple.

Chad, I was really thinking of starting a thread like this - thank you for reading my mind!
![]() My absolute favorite driving song is Tom Petty's "Running Down a Dream". Not only is the tempo and intruments great, but the lyrics have a big meaning to Lady and I. ![]() "Running down a dream, that never would come to me... Working on a mystery, going wherever it leads, running down a dream..." That was exactly what I did when i flew half way across the country to get the car I always wanted and drove her home on a short vacation trip. That song always gets my right foot heavy. Had the radio worked, I would have been listening to that song on the way home from South Carolina! Second favorite is Chris Isaak's "Gone Riding". Those two songs were used in a video I made of the trip to get Lady The Outlaw's "Green Grass and High Tides" has some wicked guitar performances and ranks third. Others tops include, but surely not limited to: George Thorogood - Highway 49 Kentucky Headhunters - Ragtop Outlaws - Ghost Riders in the Sky George Thorogood - You Can't Catch Me Deep Purple - Highway Star Little Feat - Let it Roll Golden Earring - Radar Love Kathy Mattea - 455 Rocket Little Village - She Runs Hot for Me Tom Petty - Love is a Long Road Eric Clapton - Hold On And a few hundred more! ![]()

On the hwy for me it "Highway Star" by Deep Purple. At 75 miles per hour the the white lines on the road pass the car with the beat of the song. (Damn! I should have applied for a government grant before before making my study public
) The other driving song I like is "Summer of '69" by Brian Adams.

Hmm...
Let's add some Marshall Tucker Band and Allman Brothers to the mix. Shoot, there's all kinds of good driving tunes. Lately I've been digging a German import CD called "Hammond Heroes"- all 60s British R&B instrumentals, heavy on grinding Hammond B3 organ work.

A good song for parking
is "My Daddy's Oldsmobile"...here, I'll sing some for you ![]() My daddy bought this car before I was born. Sure like the radio, I love the horn. I love the great big shiny steerin' wheel, Here in my daddy's Oldsmobile. Four kids can sure fill up a big back seat. They used to stop and get us something sweet. Now Mamma says: "Let's pray for one good meal." Here in my daddy's Oldsmobile.
Daddy says there's work in San Antone. Two days of ridin', it ain't no big deal, Here in my daddy's Oldsmobile. Instrumental break.
Sure like the radio, I love the horn. I love the great big shiny steerin' wheel, Here in my daddy's Oldsmobile. Here in my daddy's Oldsmobile.

Thought of a couple more
![]() L A Guns showdown off cocked and loaded Saliva Always, Broken Sunday, or King of the stereo I like saliva cause they hit it hard, in kind of an old school get down to basics way, I'm no music critic, so don't know the terms, but its kind of reminiscent of Of the way deep purple did it in highway star. Well I like it any way, and thought I'd share.

How do you guys keep your hands on the wheel when you are singing YMCA? I am going to say this thread has the potential to be one of the longest ever. Considering how many generations are represented here and how many songs are out there, this thing could go on forever. I have to include Jimmy Buffet's "Little Red Ragtop". It is not necessarily a great driving song but it is an appropriate song for my car. To my knowledge, it was never released as a single. Keep it going guys.

Took a ride down to Red Hill (Patrick Henry's last home near Brookneal VA) this afternoon and grabbed a box of cassettes going out the door, not knowing what might be in it.
The hour each way drive was made enjoyable by the Swimming Pool Q's, Widespread Panic and Counting Crows. Adam Duritz has one of the best voices in rock and roll, and Jeff Calder and the Q's are among the most literate of the Southern rockers. Yup. Gregg Allman was right. This road could go on forever.
