1970 442 Restoration Project For Sale

First, I would like to thank everyone for their help and support over the past two years, as I worked on my 1970 442 restoration. Unfortunately, the time has come for me to sell this project, and the parts I acquired along the way, that total over 25K.

The car is a numbers matching 1970 442, which came equipped with Ram Air, dual gate, posi (308 or 323 can’t remember), and AC. The car was finished in burgundy mist with black stripes and black interior from the factory, and has a clean Virginia title.

I am selling the rear clip of the car, engine, transmission, and rear end. The good, the quarter panels and roof are extremely clean and original, and a new rear window section has been installed. Also installed are new body mounts, engine mounts, and transmission mounts. The drive train ran great before I began stripping the car down to have them removed a few months ago, and my build thread below shows the compression readings from last year. The bad, the person who welded in my floor pans did a terrible job and they will need to be replaced along with the trunk pan. I have a new trunk pan from AMG for a 1970 Chevelle, which will fit all the way from the back seat up to the rear crease of the trunk pan. Also included is a complete metal dash section which I purchased from a donor car to replace the rust the car currently has.

I am setting the body, drive train and suspension for $4500. Once the body is gone I will be selling the following:

  • Original Ram Air Hood in excellent condition – the hood has never been fixed or repaired. It will include a reproduction OAI air cleaner assembly, breather tubes, hood pins, retainers, and reproduction hood tongue from Fusicks (cast)
  • Reupholstered Seats – the front buckets have new springs, foam, tracks, covers, chrome piping (the good stuff) and chrome headrest release buttons. The rear seats have new foam and batting.
  • Miscellaneous Interior – new carpet, floor matts, arm rests, front kick panels, headliner, wind lace, complete visors, and all visor mounting hardware
  • Refurbished Dual gate and console – the console and shifter have been refurbished and include a new top place and cable from Fusicks
  • New front and rear bumpers – these are reproduction bumpers from OPGI
  • New Tunk lid – This is a reproduction lid and is identical to the early run 70 trunk lids without the circles – it was fitted on the car and lined up perfectly
  • Complete set of tinted glass in excellent condition
  • A pair of Door Shells – the passenger door had a slight create fixed and the drivers door has a small 1.5 inch section of rust on the lip – again very nice for 45 year old metal
  • A pair of Full Doors – these doors are completely rust free and include the glass and tracks
  • A pair of 1970 Fenders – the passenger fender has a rust hole the size of a quarter on the bottom but the braces is perfects. It also had a small dent which was repaired near the head light. The drivers fender has no rust but it did have a dent poorly knocked out but is easily fixable
  • Miscellaneous Chrome – all the chrome is been cleaned and polished and is ding free - wheel well, trunk, rear window, front window, weather channel
  • AM/FM Radio, 8 Track Player and AC Lap Vents
  • Tilt column and sport wheel – column repainted with new switches and has new horn cap
  • Factory gauges restored with new quartz movement on clock/tac
  • Rebuilt carburetor, fuel line, and choke tubes
  • Sport Mirrors
  • Other Reproduction Stuff – 442 Grills, Headlight bezels, window fuzzies, and weather stripping

There are too many parts to list in one listing. Again, I will be posting these items for sale once the body is sold. If you want to buy the body and package some items I am open to the idea. I am located in Fort Myers Florida 15 minutes from the airport for anyone who wants to see the car or the collection of parts. I can be reached at 508-330-1883 or digregorioj@comcast.net

I owned this car in 1997/1998. I went to the OCA Nats in Lansing and a buddy wanted a W27 for his W30. I bought the W27 and traded him for this car. I myself always wanted a burgundy mist car. It was this rusty even then. Too much for me. I just got it running and driving. It was a real Ram Air car for sure. I did keep the original OAI breather. Good luck with the sale and whomever finishes it. It will be cool.

Thanks - did you do any work to the car when you had it? I think the interior floors could have been repaired, it was just the trunk, trunk lip, and rear window that needed help, and the rear window is fixed. This car would be perfect for someone who know how to weld and paint.

No, nothing really. I just got it running and driving. I had it driving good enough to go to a BOP show Marietta, Ga. It was definitely fixable. It had some cool factory options. I think it came from Knoxville TN. I was told one of the previous owners was a helicopter pilot. Thats were those Danger stickers came from. I will look but I think I swapped the tac's because it had Danger on the Tac as well. I thought that was cool.

I have the protecto plate from the second owner. According to what I have found the car was bought by someone in the military who got deployed 1 year after buying the car and then it ended up with someone else who was in the service for 10 years. Then it was own by an old lady who passed it on to her daughter - after 1987 the history is lost.

So I got a call from someone on Tuesday regarding the ebay post wanting to know more about the car and the collection of parts. After talking for a little while I asked if they planned to restore the car and if they have any experience with 442's - the guy said he had some experience and we left it at that. When I googled his number to see where he was calling from - it turns out they are a very large manufacturer of Oldsmobile reproduction parts - I felt like an idiot

So John, curious, are you selling the parts individually or as a lot?
I'm sure I'm not the only one interested, thanks.

My preference would be to sell the car and parts as a lot. If no one is interested, I will begin to sell the parts after the body and motor are sold. As you can see by the list I have pretty much everything to complete the car but the side marker lights, tail lights, and door panels. I have had 4 restoration places call me on the package lot - for someone who knows how to weld and paint this car is a no brainer

Why are you selling?

Is it the issue of finding a body shop?

I ran across a Buick GS that had similar rust issues.

The estimates ran about 300 hours.

Do the math at $65-85 per hour.

It's a combination of things... I started this project with 5 blown discs in my neck. The doctors thought it would be a good hobby but after 2 years and no progress they feel like it is doing more harm than good. Had I found a reasonable shop down here I would have most likely kept the car. It was my dream car and took me 2 years to find

Price Lowered

I have posted the car on Craigslist and ebay with a new price of $3500 for the shell and drivetrain. If someone wants the car and all the parts above the price is 15K - which is a 10K loss not including labor. If interested send me an email digregorioj@Comcast.net

Best advice I received in this hobby about 40 years ago:

"Always buy the best body and frame you can. Much cheaper and better in the long run"

The frame, rear quarters, and inner and outer wheel wells are in excellent condition. I could get away with installing a 3 piece trunk floor and cleaning up the interior floor pan welds for 2.5K - so the estimate above is way too high. Including installing all the new metal I have and paint the 3 estimates have been between 12 to 14K

12-14 K is really low for that much body work.

The paint and supplies are at least 3 K

What are the estimates in hours for those prices?

I know of many, many people who went into a body shop at X price, and exited with a 2X or 3X cost.

I had 3 estimates done by high level restoration shops that all deal with old muscle cars. They quoted 5 to 6K for paint and 6 to 8K for the metal work. You haven't seen the car in person to gauge just how solid the quarters, fenders, doors, frame, etc are.. The metal work was for the trunk pan (full 1 piece), 1 piece floor pan, and fire firewall. If you look on AMD's installation site this would be less than 4.5K if it were a chevelle or Camaro. As for the price double and tripling, two of the places said they don' t charge more than they estimate and if the metal doesn't take that long to fit they won't charge for it.. Also the labor prices down here aren't as high as MA. BTW how are things in good old Medway MA. I lived in Bellingham for 15 years before moving down to Florida last fall.

This is cheap if you total up that the car comes with over 15K in parts alone..

The car is sold

Someone saw the car on craiglist and came by and bought it tonight. I will start posting parts here and on ebay over the next few days. I am interested in moving the larger pieces first.
