Not that Mike or the car need any validation, but I can vouch for both having had the pleasure of hanging with Mike at more than a few local shows. Mike is a straight up, knowledgeable enthusiast and the 442 is top notch ... as the pictures attest. If I had the funds, me and Mike would be drinking beers as the keys exchanged hands! Best of luck buddy and hope your health is on the upswing.

That must of been a difficult decision to make, sorry it has come to this. Your car is beautiful and a real bargain when compared to what I have currently spent doing the restoration on my 71 442. I hope your health holds, and you are able to sell it quickly and easily. All the best.

Buyers beware
No matter whats been told to you from anyone, prospective buyers, get an independent appraiser or another set of eyes to look at the car Before you buy if you cannot do so yourself. I didn't so here is a warning to you on my dime. - I talked with the OP about this car, read all his posts which are hundreds, did what I thought was a thorough job in asking the right questions, getting more photos (he knows how to take all the Right ones), asked not once, not twice, but three time about rust, rust repair, and how I know the east side of the U.S. and how it treats cars on three different phone calls. All answered each time with " No I live far enough away from the ocean to where it doesn't affect us and the car has a few rock chips but NO RUST its been garaged all its life." I saw the glowing review of one of his buddies who said the car was top notch (open your eyes) and the owner was a stand up guy (maybe to you), and knowledgeable (seemed to be). I made the mistake of buying into it all and in my old age bought into the hype. Don't do it. I will never ever buy another car without an appraisal or me seeing it and neither should you. This is my first bad experience and will be my last. You do not want that sick sinking feeling when you watch your new toy coming off the truck only to be sick with regret and anger. I even let myself simmer down a week before posting but this is still mad..obviously. This is the truth and example of car buying 101 in todays world for some people. Can the car be fixed? Sure it can.. is the end of the world? No. Was I lied to... YES! Email went unanswered after possession of the car but responded with rapid response before. No phone, no nothing... crickets..but what am I going to say that the OP anyway that he doesn't already know? Why did you lie? Only he knows. No, the only thing I can do is warn others of others...and future owners wanting to sell their cars, Dont be this guy.. and future buyers, Don't be me! The picture is an example of what I got. There are many more pictures of the same in different places but you get the idea. Mike you can lie to me or others all you want but you might also be exposed. Karma ? Yeah, I believe in it. Sleep well, you seemingly have no conscious and OBTW - sue me if this is all false.

Welcome to the site 442-4. It's unfortunate that the flaws were not disclosed prior to your purchase. I am in the group that will not buy anything sight unseen for the reason that you expressed and others opinions on what the term minimal may mean could differ from my own. Hopefully all works out.

my thoughts
I am sorry for your troubles but I have to ask did you really invest $26000 of your hard earned money & not pay $200 for a private third party inspection of the car? That was a very bad decision.
To the seller I must say if you proclaimed this car to be rust free then you sir are a liar. Shame on you.

Buyer - I'm really sorry to learn that the 442 did not meet your expectations but I'm going to have to stick with my comments (at the time) as they were honest and sincere and not part of some scheme to lure in prospective buyers as you suggest in saying that you "made the mistake of buying into it all”. I can assure you that Mike did not solicit my comments. My comments were based entirely on my casual observations of the 442 at several shows over the course of several years and NOT on a detailed, thorough pre-purchase inspection …i.e. (the type that should have occurred).
Honestly, I’m very surprised there is rust on the car as I never noticed any over the course of several years but again, as stated above, I never got on my hands and knees to inspect the car. Furthermore, I’m not going to join the lynch mob and call Mike a liar because I was not privy to the conversations that took place between you and him. However, I would be very surprised to learn that he intentionally misled you about the rust. I hope that you can get beyond your anger and frustration and learn the love the Olds despite the flaws that you have discovered.

I read the thread, and that is a very bad thing to do.
Misrepresentation of a car is really bad.
It happened to me many years ago, and I am still upset about it.
The only good thing is that the guy I bought the car from went to jail for fraud.
I would recommend filing charges against Mike Murphy. He needs to learn a lesson.

Sounds like you are the shill for the sale.

I'm very sorry to hear of your misfortune, and very sorry IF the seller truly did misrepresent the car.
It's a gorgeous car and I hope you're able to fix that rust with minimal additional investment.
Shame on the seller IF he did indeed represent the car as rust free.

Let's not reduce this to name calling!
I know Mike, and have seen his car at various shows over the last couple years. I have always admired Mike's car and it's condition, but like Scott never climbed down on my hands and knees to inspect it like I was going to buy it.
I have helped Scott on his current 442 project. I do not believe either know each other well enough to be a "shill for a sale". They are a couple car guys who see each other a couple times a year at a car show.
It is unfortunate that the buyer is not happy. None of us know the conversations or details involved in this transaction. I hope Mike's health improves and that I see him at the BOP show in Cary in June. I also hope that this is resolved amicably between buyer and seller.

Hands and knees
I can appreciate friendships as I have a few but Im 6'3 and took these photos standing up and one bent at the waist. Im kind of at odds at what others have admired (the bubbles?) or why they would endorse it as "TOP NOTCH'. Its clearly seen from a standing position which leads the eyes to follow down the wheel well in which its clearly seen as well - standing. As far as the Getting on Hands and knees and Underneath??.... we wont even go there.
This is a buyers beware post and what happened with my experience. Im sharing it. Its why its a forum and just letting others know to be very very careful with trickery.
I took everything into consideration before I spent, yes my hard earned money, on what I thought was my dream car. I took the sum of the whole from my end before basing my option to purchase. I certainly did not base it on one review. I based it on seller/buyer talks, all the pictures that I requested and got of every angle up down top and bottom of everything I asked for and more, the 13 total pages of posts the seller wrote and I read every single one one of them right down to not driving it the rain because detailing the undercarriage was too much work, I read the glowing reviews not from not one but many on the cars condition, I bought into the hype meaning I didnt think it was all a scam or a a chance to deceive like someone so defensively wrote. Maybe hype is not the word so lets call it hindsight. I didnt think I needed yet another opinion in hindsight of an appraiser even if it were free after feeling comfortable with a retired military man who was seemingly honest and genuine as well. I got the answer three times man to man when asked the question about rust on the phone and pictures to back it up. Each time the answer was a resounding no, no and no rust. Ok Ill buy it! What else can I say? Well..I can say this. If I am to stay in the hobby and thats a big IF, I will assume no matter who it is for the rest of my life that the seller is a big fat liar and I will need everything from appraisals to social security numbers and background checks because of this experience. No thank you. I will either quit the hobby or try and move on knowing that all in the world are NOT this way. Gratefully at this time, nor will I ever, sell my soul for a dollar. The email I sent for anyone who cares will follow for my request to the seller about pictures. Now anyone who thinks I would have bought this car with the proper information and candid conversations I had with the seller.... well, there's always those types, my bad. I think I will bow out from here at this point. Kind of trying to move on with things and no sense of rehashing old wounds but for those who say they know this guy... do you really know him. Maybe ask him why he didn't call me or make it right. Better yet, ask him why he felt the need to deceive. I did but I didn't get an answer.

Hi Mike, I got the 5 photos. If you could do the under side I would greatly appreciate it and have a nice car instead of all these bondo buggies around here. After that, Ill either deposit, even if you want me to now, or send amount after you get the bottom photos. Maybe doors, floors and quarters is all I need. I appreciate you working with me. I didnt want to go that high but dont want to lose out for that little either.

I got everything a couple days ago. I wanted to wait to assess everything in my mind. Of course in retrospect I would have done things differently but I cannot lie. The car was disappointing. I know I asked you several times about it being back east and how humidity effects cars but you assured me each time that it was not the case. When I asked for photos you sent them and all seemed to check out as you said and photos. What I didnt like was selective shots Not of all the rust bubbles that you knew were there. They were not told to me nor photographed. As much as you have been under and around the car I know its 100% positive you knew about every one of them. I should have has it appraised. I should have done a lot of things but it will only reinforce my wonders that not anyone can be trusted. I guess as long as you can sleep at night and be awake with a clear conscious... well then more power to you because you got me on this one. The rest of the car is what you described so have no idea why you felt the need to not tell the truth or be forthright in my questions. Thanks Mike, my first bad car buying experience.

The more I read the new posts, the more angry I become.
Because the seller knew the car had rust issues, and hid that from the buyer.
I could spot those rust bubbles from 10 feet away.
The only way to make it right is the seller gives the buyer a portion of the money back.
The rust that is showing will be much worse when you take a grinder to it.
Mike Murphy needs to "man up" and do the right thing.

Sorry this happened to you. I bought a car last year without going to look at it. According the seller the only rust was on the rear section of the trunk. It turns out it needed the rear trunk section, rear window channel, trunk floor and interior floors. I don't blame the seller as much as I do myself for not flying out to inspect the car.
#26
When one has to beg someone to take pictures it is usually a sign. I have done alot of out of state dealings and I always tell the seller to take pictures of all the bad spots. I tell them to put themselves in my shoes. I also tell them that I already know what a 71 442 looks like so spare me the 3/4 views from 10' away. And it is not difficult to tip a camera upward from the ground to snap shots of the floors. Or pay someone on here that may be close to inspect. I had a fellow member do that for me and it worked out great.
#27
Well....,
Anyone else wonder why mmurphy77 has been silent thru all of this?
Do the right thing and take the car back, refund all of the money to the buyer and resell the car for it's real value.

Looks like the car is now on ebay being sold by a classic car dealer.

It got sold at a LOSS because I didnt want the nitemare around anymore. Its not that the car isnt worth whatever someone wants to pay for it but thats not the question or the point. It just needed to leave for me to move on from the experience, again partial fault on me. I think taking photos I requested and hiding the wrong areas and including the right areas was a deliberate deception. What happened mmurphy77 did karma catch up to you or is the silence a guilty pleasure. This is what happens in front of so called friends' and peers when you do this to someone and not handling your business like a man with me. You get outted. Rust in peace.

Yup, marked as sold but relisted: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Oldsmobile-C...781322?vxp=mtr

Looks like 15' photos to me. And even at different angles it looks as if it's a different color gold from the stripes down between both tires. If thats the case it appears to be a quick bubble removal job.
