1968 Oldsmobile 442 Convertible

EDIT: SOLD - Pending final payment and pickup

Hi all,

I recently picked up a 1968 442 convertible but am admitting its going to be too much of a project for me to handle so I'm going to go ahead and pass it along. Below is some information about the car.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a true 1968 Oldsmobile 442 Convertible for sale. This is a complete car and would make a great project for someone who can handle some of the work on their own. It is running and driving in the condition it is now. It also does have its original numbers matching 400 engine. I believe it has all the rare trim as well. However, this is a project and the biggest issue with the car is its rust. It has a good amount of it and you can tell a previous owner has done some fiber glass work. I tried to do my best to describe the condition of the car with the pictures below. As I mention, this car is very complete. I'm only selling it because I don't have enough experience with body work. If you want any more information on the car or would like to see it, please use any of my contact information provided. Only 5,142 1968 442 convertibles were made. This car is a 3 speed automatic. The convertible top motor does run, but not correctly enough to lift it. The top will also need to be replaced, but I do have one in a box that has been unused. Upon inspection, I found that this top does have a minor tear about a half an inch.
Again, the rust isn't pretty. I would definitely recommend a frame swap.

I did also recently put in a brand new gas tank and replaced all the related tubes and clamps.

VIN: 344678M279147

Cowl Tag Information:02D - Fisher body production date build. 5th week (D) of Feb (02) 1968. Seems funny to have 5 weeks in Feb, but in 68 it happened because the start of month and end of month were partially in 'a week'.
ST 68 - 1968 model production
3 - Oldsmobile division
36 - Model; Cutlass with V8
67 - body style: convertible
LAN - Lansing production
285148 - Body number assigned by Lansing Fisher Body Works
TR 950 - Black interior
PAINT - Y - 2 Saffron with Black top

I do also have a donor frame from a 1970 Cutlass convertible if interested. I will not part with the frame until the car is sold though.

Thanks

Sorry it didn't work out for you. Hopefully you can find one in better shape to enjoy. Good luck with your sale.

Another '68 4-4-2 convertible with a bench seat. I've only seen 3 others with bench seats (mine is one of them). I don't know where the numbers I remember came from, or where they went, but back in the mid- to late-80s in Hemmings Motor News when '68 4-4-2 convertibles with bench seats were advertised, they claimed that only 201 were made like that. Rare? Probably yes. Increased value because of rarity? Well, let's just say, except for the intermittent times that I can have my girlfriend buckled in right next to me, I'd rather have buckets! Just sayin'!

I just had someone message me offering $500 for the steering wheel. Car is too complete to part in my opinion, but I was shocked on getting that message. Are the 68 wooden steering wheels that hot of an item?

Those wheels were used by Chevy and Buick also. Going rate at swap meets for uncracked examples are about half of that. Sell the wheel, buy a replacement, pocket the difference.

Joe it must be your neighborhood, around here(Tx.)ones with multiple cracks actually sell in the area of 400 to 500 if complete with hub and horn parts. Last Pate swap meet I attended I looked at a complete nice one being offered for 750obo. Later in the day I saw the new owner walking around with it and he told me he got it for 600.

Those are prices I've seen at Carlisle, which is not known for it's bargains.

I know of at least two uncracked ones that have sold for at least $500 in the last 6 months. This is a fairly new thing. A year ago they were selling for $250 and cracked ones were selling for $100

New owner came and picked up the car this weekend so its officially gone. Sad to see it go. New owner seemed to be really enthusiastic about getting started on his new project. He was very easy to work with; probably one of my best ebay experiences with cars.

Time to start looking for the next one....

Good for you Joffroi. Sometimes e-bay buyers aren't good at completing transactions. I'm interested to see what you pick-up next. I think you did the right thing on this particular car. - Steven

Thanks. It sucks seeing it go but I do agree it was probably a better route to go. I'm keeping my eyes open now for a nice 68 442 hardtop now in my budget. Much more complete and much less rust haha. We'll see.
