Here's the rest of the copy that goes with the pictures of the 1954 truck:

Eminently cool and, judging from the photos, well restored, it still needs somebody deeply passionate about big old trucks to make room for it in their garage. From the seller’s description:

Civil Defense truck, running a coveted Gold Comet 128-hp engine, 5+2 trans. It has a working siren & super secure locking compartments. This was one of 1,300 Civil Defense Rescue Service trucks ordered by the federal government & distributed to various cities & counties throughout the nation during the cold war. They were filled with gas masks, stretchers, oxygen, first aid supplies, hand tools & other power equipment to handle any disaster of the day. The body was manufactured by Swift. This truck runs well, stops well, and is in overall good condition. It is stuffed with tools, a period generator, and many supplies.
Here's the interior:

Here's the Hemmings article with photos.

Just did a quick web search and it's likely this has hydraulic brakes. The bigger units like dump trucks had air brake systems.

I don't think anybody was using mechanical brakes in the 50's and this truck has to be from the late 40's or 50's. I can't imagine trying to stop this thing with mechanical brakes.
