1965 Starfire convertible - $3500 - Baraboo, WI
I finally got a chance to drive up and see this car last weekend, and while it is a great project for someone that can do the correct bodywork, unfortunately, it's more of a project then I want to tackle at this time.
The car is 99% complete and in running & driving condition.
Good points:
-Very new convertible top in excellent condition
-Interior is almost flawless
-Seats in great original shape
-Dash pad perfect
-Armrests perfect
-Interior chrome all excellent condition
-Frame is rock solid. I tapped it with a ball-peen hammer in at least a dozen points along both sides.
-No apparent leaks from the car itself
-No leaking of any kind into the interior from seals, etc.
-Options include power windows, AC, power antenna, power trunk release, maybe others?
-Bucket/console car
-TONS of extra parts/chrome in PERFECT shape in the trunk.
-Headlight bezels inner & outer with perfect OEM headlights & all brackets
-Chrome hood stripes (horizontal & vertical
-Chrome rocker panels (All but the very back ones for the exhaust I believe)
-Wheel arches
-spare radio
-spare heater core in the housing
-Lots of other spare parts as well. Did not go through every piece.
-Engine was redone appx. 8 years ago by the current owner. Hardened valve seats done in the head, and it started easily and ran okay, but does need a tune up.
Car ran and drove fairly well. Tracked straight, and the steering & suspension were solid & not worn out. Used, but not needing any immediate attention from the test drive I took.
Bad points:
-The only gauges that worked were the speedometer and the idiot lights.
-Climate controls did not appear to be working at all.
-The passenger front & drivers rear power windows did not work
-The power top was disconnected (hydraulic leak)
-Older restoration, and needs the body totally redone.
This car is solid, and not rotten by any means. It was damn near all original except that sometime before the current owner got it, someone had gone over the body and repainted it from the original white to red, which now needs totally redone again. Other than the big patch in the driver's quarter panel, it all appeared really straight, but there was evidence of the usual rot in the lower front fenders and rear quarters that had been patched, but not extensively.
If this car had not required the body work needed to get it back to good condition, I would have bought it, but I'm not a body guy. I would have preferred a perfect body with drivetrain issues. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. Regardless, with all the spare perfect chrome trim that goes with this one, this could be a gold mine for the right body guy. I'm just not that guy. Ideally, it needs the body redone on a rotisserie.
The owner's name is Mike, and he's been great to deal with on the whole process. I asked him if he would be okay with me positing it out here for you guys. I'd love to see this one go to a good home. It's worth saving, just more of a project than I can handle unfortunately.
His number is 608-963-9256. The car is located in Baraboo, Wisconsin.
He's firm at $3500 on the price, and I believe it's well worth that with all the extras that go with it.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask. I'll do my best to answer, since I just went to look it over this past weekend. 1100 miles with a truck/trailer to test drive a car. Oh well. It was a fun trip even if I came home empty-handed...

Just curious if anyone here was interested in this car. If you don't want to say so publicly, just shoot me an IM. I'd be very interested to know where it ends up and what becomes of it. I wish I had the time/energy/resources to restore one of these like they should be.

If you can get it for $3000, you're getting an awesome deal.
No, I would not try to drive it from WI, to CO in its current condition. It starts, runs & drives, but it has been years since it was driven regularly. I personally would trailer it anywhere longer than a short hop to get it home.
Not to say it wouldn't make the trip, as it drives straight & the brakes don't pull it one way or the other, but with a car that old, there could be a slight rust spot in the brakes somewhere, or a seal that lets go in a wheel cylinder, or any number of hoses or belts that need checked/replaced.
With it being a single line master cylinder, I would be very leery of using it at highway speeds until you know for sure it is al 100% up to good working condition.
All that being said, it is well worth restoring, just more of a project than I could currently tackle at the present time.

Just curious, Did anyone end up with this car? Hoping that it found a home before winter sets in again, as it I do not believe it had anywhere indoors to be stored, and I'd hate to think about it sitting outside for another winter.
Additionally, if the car has sold, I'll ask for the thread to be locked and remove the owners contact information.

Just as an FYI, I got a call this morning from the owner of the car. It just recently sold, so this thread can be locked.
Perchance was it someone on the boards here that bought it? If so, please let us know how it pans out for you. I loved the car, just not what I was specifically looking for.
