In the mirror base are two holes. Those holes provide access to the bottom of each screw that holds the mirror to the door. The bottom of each of those screws has an allen wrench fitting in it. With the right size allen wrench, you should be able to put it in each hole and turn the screw clockwise to loosen it. Once each of the two screws is loosened, you should be able to slide the mirror assembly forward to a point where the screw heads will fit through the holes in the door and the mirror will come out.

Just to add to Randy's post, I'll first reiterate that the screws turn CLOCKWISE, opposite to what you would think. Second, on every mirror I've ever tried to remove, they were rusted to the point of being impossible to turn with the tiny allen wrench that you have to use. Once I strip out the allen screws, I usually end up using a hammer and block of wood to "persuade" the mirror forward on the door until the retainer bolts reach the keyholes that allow them to come out.

The retainer screws are actually button head allen screws with the allen recess in the small end of the screw. The screws are drawn up against the underside of the door skin using the allen wrench to hold the mirror in place.

That's just a regional issue, in my part of Tx, the allen wrench will still do the job.

By the way that's not a stupid question at all as it seems to be a mounting system unique to Oldsmobile alone.

I have just raced downstairs to check my door...when hammering on block of softwood, force the mirror rearwards, not forward. I have removed a couple of mirrors at the mall (wreckers) and hammered rearwards with successful results.

On the Oldsmobiles of that era you would have to slide the mirror forward. In my experience, the keyholes were always at the forward end of the slotted area.

Here's pictures from a 1969 and 68 doors. The 1969 had the wrong mirror bolted to the door.

And here's what the backside of the mirror looks like

And if you look close, here's the hole where the allen wrench goes in

If anyone were to ever grease them screws before installing, the rust might not be such an issue.

Well, I have to change my story! I was sure the mirror would have to slide forward but the pictures tell the real story - the mirror HAS to slide aft! I stand corrected!

I have at least one mirror with a pair of correct screws which also have Philips drive on the domed side. Always wondered who could reach up there and fit the screw driver into that slot when the window was in place !!
