Header Installation
I just recently purchased a pair of headers for my 72 Supreme 455. I was wondering what the best method would be to put them on?

Big blocks aren't too bad, small blocks are much worse (they hug the block closer and starter installation becomes a nightmare.
Raise the car way up, and remove the oil filter adaptor from the RH side of the engine. You should now be able to snake the RHheader up into place and secure. Use a new metal ribbed gasket on the filter adaptor. LH side can be a litle more tricky, but still possible. Really tough on a 4 speed car, as you have to remove the clutrch countershaft and snake it back in when you're done. Most difficult part, and liste close here, is the oil dipstick tube. With manifolds, it fits between the manifold and the head, so you can jusy remove the manifold. On headers, the tube goes between the header flange and the head and you WILL break off the tube at the block trying to thread that over if you leave it in place. Remove it before you put the header in and replace it after the header is in place and secured. You may also have to remove the starter to snake the header into position. Good luck. Be happy it's not a small block. |
