Will this Mallory dist. work?
http://www.jegs.com/i/Mallory/650/3763401/10002/-1
Will this distributor w/mechanical advance fit my 1965 98 w/425? I'm asking because I can get one used. Thanks! edit- Something tells me its for a computer controlled car and that I need vacuum advance. Is this right? Last edited by skubydobdo; September 21st, 2008 at 01:57 PM.. |

buyer beware, IMO
I had a UNILITE one time. It came with the car I still have. It started have problems and Super Shop keep trading out the module for me. After the third one they instead that I buy a new coil @ $75-80 in 93' I did and it did not make a difference. I pulled that peace of junk out and got an HEI out of the bone yard for $15. I still have the HEI today only replaced the cap and wires this year. Maybe the technology has come along in 15 yrs. But I will never chance it. |

Well, no and yes. No, it's not for a computer controlled car and yes you want vacuum advance. An all-mechanical advance distributor is primarily used for racing where part throttle performance and economy are not important.

I actually bought the same distributor off of ebay used for like 40 bucks. I have not had a chance to see how it works because I am in the process of getting my engine ready to run, but I was planning on getting a used hei one eventually when I can actually drive the car.

Get a spare module to carry in the glove box if you buy one. I think I still have nightmares about changing out modules for pissed off customers during my many years at Super Shops.

gearhead, did you work in Irving? That was the shop I wore out, back in 93. I always wandered if those modules put Super Shops out of business.

It will work but unless you're building a car that will run the 1/4 mile in less than 9 seconds, save your money and get an OE one from a late 70's Olds motor.

ASAP is what put Super Shops out of business. We had the market cornered for local business but they decided to go after Summit/ Jegs business with the mail order company ASAP. They dumped tons of money in it and it failed misreably.

OK. Is there a certain one I should try to snag? Is there a certain vehicle whose mechanical advance curve will be set up closer to what i need for the 425 I have? Or just any ol' late seventies one?
