See where it states 39M123456.
The 3 means olds division
The 9 means 1969
M means it was assembled at Lansing MI plant.
The other six numbers are the vehicle serial number

For your question, you are concerned with the second number. This will give you the year. 0 will be 1970 a number 4 will be 1974. If I'm not mistaken, 455 engines which are 396021 were made from 1967 till 1976.

The 68-72 had 396021 F and the 73-76 had 396021 FA.

The F block may have been a replacement block. Post both the stampings on both blocks. What is the F number on the rear of the blocks?

The F block is stamped 34Exxxxxx F7 (1974 Delta 88)
The FA block is stamped L4ExxxxxG F7 (1975 boat)
F block does have mounting hole for clutch "Z" bar ball with A/T flywheel and crank.
Marine FA does not, but has M/T flywheel and crank.
I know of others with 74 F blocks, as well.
I didn't check Julian date codes, but I suspect the F may be early production, and the FA to be late production due to being in a 75 model boat.

I have 2 73 blocks out of big cars and they are both FA blocks with F5 on the rear. All the 73 and later blocks I have seen have been that way. I do have one 73 block that the guy took the A off the block to make it look like an earlier block. If I did not know he did it, you would never know.

To be honest, I was surprised to find that I had gotten a 74 F block. I didn't even check to verify it was a 455. I just loaded the motor and drove home with it. I'm not one to kick a gift horse in the mouth.
Easiest way to spot a fake F block, is to look at the driver's side, where the starter bolts on. Directly aft of the starter brace tab, 3" or so, is a threaded hole, either 7/16", or 1/2" with a round machine mark about 1 1/2" diameter. Fa block does not have this hole, but F block does. It's something you just can't fake, lol.

Had to be. 80% of the town taxes from what I've heard.
What is the population over there, 50k?

P.s. I think I have a 75 olds marine carb laying around. # 7045183 K4 1475

I go past the plant to and from work.
I'm interested. Got a pic? I'll check my carb number. I think it might be 17045183, tho.

Same thing, they added a 1 in front of the carb numbers in 75 I believe, and everything started with 170 after that.

EDIT: Apparently it is not a marine carburetor, having the emissions vacuum pieces on it.
I cannot find the GM application numbers for this. and the decoder on 442.com is dead wrong.
