Question cylinder heads "J" or "H"

Hi there
Is there anyone out there who can help me with cylinder heads of the 1964 394”?
On my car the ID on the cylinder heads starts with an “H”. One of them is cracked so I get another one, there the letter is “J” in the beginning. Is there a big different between them, can use the “J” marked on my engine, can I use the same valves as in the “H” head?

Thanks Per

J and H heads are for a 455 olds motor.

Also the H head is VERY RARE and valuable. Are you sure it is an H head that you cracked?

I'll definitely take it if you don't want it anymore.
Is this car in Sweden?
an H head is probably worth twice the amount of the car that you have it in.

It must be some kind of mistake, i΄m talking about a 394" from 60-64 and my head has the ID: "H 069 822L and the other has: J 281 677.
And the reason is that i saw on tha Falcon sales E-store, it was different valves for Starfire and the other ones (i have an Dynamic 88 but what car the "J" head came from I don΄t have any idea.

I don't know what happened to the reply I posted yesterday. Maybe I never sent it....

My Motor's Manual shows that H heads were used on '63 2bbl 394s and '64 394s. J heads were used on '63 4bbl 394s. My '63 parts book shows that '62 and '63 used the same heads (regardless of engine code) and the same valves. I would imagine '64 used these as well. Non-Starfire '61s used different heads and valves and '61 Starfire had their own unique heads and (larger) valves. Actually, only the driver's side head will have a number on it anyway, and it was only for engine identification. You'll have to pick a head for the driver's side, and then visually match up a mate for the passenger's side - one with the same appearance and markings.

Here's a link to an AACA thread with some engine part number interchangability:

Could someone further explain this to me?
Different heads all together?

Different heads all together.

Actually, it's not that they're H or J heads. It's that they are heads from H or J motors, unlike your newer heads, which are H or J heads. Olds stamped an H or a J in front of the engine number to identify the engine. Your heads have an H or a J cast into them identifying the head.
