394 casting #'s ???

I just picked up a 394 olds, I've been trying to "de-code" the motor but all the info I am finding doesn't quite match.
the casting # on the "bellhousing" is 577476 - 4 1/8
the stamped # on the drivers side of the block at the center exhaust port is G148493
it has a cast iron 4bbl intake # 580677
the motor was pulled from a 60's speed boat, and will be a donor for my 60 olds dynamic 88.
If anyone knows the proper "de-code" for this motor, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Some of this info looks bad to me. But some good. Did this come from the online Olds FAQ? Their info is riddled with bad info on the early rockets.

582813 should be '62 only, and not '61 or any other year.

NONE of those casting numbers should be '59-64! They should be '59-60 371, '59-60 394, '61 394, '62 394, and '63-4 394. The blocks are too different from each other to have the same casting number for all years '59-64.

As for the original question, on the top of the bellhousing, a 394 will have "4-1/8" cast on to indicate the bore size of a 394

this helped me, hopefully it will help someone else as well!

I don't know where those casting numbers came from - where did you get them? I don't quite trust the FAQ for older stuff like this. I don't think there were enough people contributing that knew enough about the old stuff. But I don't know where to go to get good information.

G148493 is the engine serial number. It must be a '61, because those engine numbers start at G001001 according to the '61 shop manual. '62 motors started at G300001. They didn't use a G in '60.

A '61 motor with a G in the front and nothing in the rear is a 10:1, 4-bbl motor. Should be painted red. Probably should have chrome valve covers.
