Urgent Action Alert: Oppose Federal Vehicle Scrappage Program

All,

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is pushing for a federal old car scrappage program as part of the economic stimulus package. I've included a link to the SEMA info page. Please write/call/email today to put a stop to this ill conceived plan.

If this can happen in the US, it can happen in Canada too. Is there a similar link that Canadians can use to voice similar feelings?

I responded.

Some people can't afford a new car every 5 years or so, and no more Olds at all if this goes thru

SEMA has recently made a big deal of the fact that they monitor pending legislation in Canada as well as in the US. I'd suggest you contact SEMA for more info. While SEMA is mainly a manufacturer's lobbying organization, they have a branch for enthusiasts - the SEMA Action Network (SAN). This is free to join and they send out a monthly email newsletter that covers pending legislative topics. They also send out alerts like this one.

*EDITED*

They'll have to crush me with em'.

The country is spiraling into a second great depression, our U.S. auto makers are pennyless morons, and they want to SCRAP everything that could be useful?!?!

I vote for a 12 cent bullet stimulus.

I might even burn all of my U.S. history books because they're "too old'' as well.

Sorry.... I've calmed down now. I apologize for the blowout.

It took me 10 years of working backbreaking jobs and learning
any way I could to be able to build and maintain my Oldsmobiles.
It took me an hour and a half to change the serpentine belt on my dad's "Cheby" Prizm. You have to be an 8 year old girl to work on that piece of junk. I had to make my own tool.

Am I too stubborn, or just not submissive enough? I'd rather have 15MPG and a BBO clunker than 35mpg and have to ride in a seemingly irreparable jelly bean with rubber bands under it.

I vote that if a check engine light comes on, and the car does not easily
explain itself for the screw up in great detail, it should be crushed rather than waste everyone's time and money trying to communicate with a pinch welded pile
of recycled toasters.

Done, and by the way, don't forget, many people, including myself, depend on these vehicles and the "old car" industry to feed our families. Unemployment doesn't need to get any higher either....

I responded to it and passed it to my family and other car buffs I know. I don't care if you voted for Obama or not and don't want to get into a discussion of who should be president, that decision has been made. Pelosi and Reed who run the two houses of Congress are extreme on many topics. I believe as freedom loving Americans we need to watch them closely and be prepared to write letters and make phone calls. They believe they have a mandate to change our country, and we need to make sure the changes they make are appropriate. So please, continue to watch them closely. I don't intend to stir the pot or offend any of you among the brotherhood of Oldsmobile owners. I live in Oregon which is next door to California (Pelosi) and Nevada (Reed) and am aware of some of their values and ideas which are contrary to mine. Just stay informed and be ready to speak out if needed.

The ironic thing about this is that putting these cars in wrecking yards instead of just crushing them is actually recycling. If you melt the car down, that takes energy and creates pollution. If you simply pull parts off of it and use them to replace broken parts, a) this does not cause pollution when the car is simply sitting in a wrecking yard, and b) by using a used part instead of a new one (if you could even get one), no energy is used or emissions created to build the new part. Add to that the fact that there is no additional environmental impact due to packaging of the new part, transportation of the new part cross country, heating and cooling of the new part in a warehouse or store, etc.

thank you very much for the heads up Joe, i made sure to drop message to Speaker Pelosi. legislation like this is simply unfair, to think that us in the classic car hobby should pay for the entire world's sins. it really steams me.

thanks again!

Don't forget the Chinese cargo ships at EVERY port in America being loaded with our scrap steel by conveyor belt 24/7. They then sell it back to us undercutting our own steel markets. Pelosi and Reed are a pox on our country. We get what we vote for.

If all cars older than 5 years are scrapped from here on out what is the larger impact? Everyone buys a new car every five years? Or the material is recycled? The first benefits guess who ( automobile manufacturers) what a coincidence. The second benefits our mother earth (I guess) and everyone else in the long run (I guess). I think the first reason is the real driving force behind this whole deal. The greenies are a force yes, but not as powerful as the automakers.

Federal Vehicle Scrappage Program

Symbolism over substance! Another hair brained idea and handout from Congress that appeals to the masses with little thought of outcome. It will cost more to execute than the resulting benefits and the taxpayers are paying for it.

Their idea of sending old cars to the crusher to make new cars at 5 times the price flies in the face of common sense. In the 50's and 60's it was not uncommon to see cars 20 years old still being driven as every day drivers. Part of the problem of todays society is our willingness to throw things away rather then fix them. Because of this we no longer have service stations we have gas stations the sell hot dogs and cokes. If we would fix the cars then we would create jobs. Crushing the cars only creates jobs for the China and Japan steel industry. Pelosi and her kind are only bowing to big business once again like they always do. I like the term "throw the bums out". Think about this the next time you cast your vote

Didn't Regan's admin try something like this in the 80's and the cut off was to be 7 years?

I posted this over on Aleromod too. I mean we have a member that just spent over $7000 rebuilding his motor so he can run 12 lbs of boost with his s/c, his car's a '99. I kinda doubt he wants this law to pass

I like the term "throw the bums out".
Eliminating older cars sooner will only have more people buying more foreign cars, sending more profit overseas. I say this because at this given point, not many people are going to even consider the big 3.
IMO, there are way too many imports here already!

Restoring old cars help support the aftermarket specialty companies that make resto parts (which sadly, some is still made in asia.) I did feel good about buying my Legendary interior, as it is handmade here at home! (at least thats what the tags said...)
If it weren't for Lady, I would have not pumped 7500 bucks back into our economy!
Restoring old cars help keep many of us out of trouble, too...

X2 about chunking those ratty bums out.

I'm frustrated with knuckleheads in government. The used car, repair shops, towing, recycling, aftermarket parts, racing industries, etc. etc. together are much larger than the domestic automakers. Here is an example of our government trying to hurt the country to try and put more 40mpg microboxes on the road to appease their environmental nut job supporters.

Uh-Oh.......I think this has to do with an upcoming conversation regarding "Carbon Credits"

"They" (the Reid/Pelosi crowd) want to get rid of all older vehicles to eliminate pollution (excuse) and implement a pre-determined "trade-cycle" timeline designed to keep the new car assembly lines rolling and thus ensuring a Clean environment and control of the population by mandating auto replacement every three or four years. One way or another they will continue to RAM their agenda home. Stop and think for a minute....

Of course this is rediculous...IS IT?? When these folks tried to take control of our guns there was outrage. Now check this out.....they will make guns for defense controlled.....the USA is quickly turning into a socialist society....read on.....

"Remember how Obama said that he wasn't going to take your guns? Well, it seems that his minions and allies in the anti-gun world have no problem with taking your ammo!

The bill that is being pushed in 18 states (including Illinois and Indiana ) requires all ammunition to be encoded by the manufacture and recorded in a data base of all ammunition sales. So they will know how much you buy and what calibers. Nobody can sell any ammunition after June 30, 2009 unless the ammunition is coded.

Any privately held uncoded ammunition must be destroyed by July 1, 2011. (Including hand loaded ammo.) They will also charge a .05 cent tax on every round so every box of ammo you buy will go up at least $2.50 or more!

If they can deprive you of ammo they do not need to take your gun!

This legislation is currently pending in 18 states: Alabama, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Washington.

Send to your friends in these states AND fight to dissolve this BILL!!

Look out, the Wacko's are on the move!

For those of you who think this is not an issue to be concerned over, take the time to read this article from the Eugene Oregon Register Guard newspaper, written by "Bob Doppelt, director of Resource Innovations and the Climate Leadership Initiative at the University of Oregon" He's laying out the rational for MANDATORY "retirement" of all cars that don't get 35 mpg or better. He gives an example of how the United Arab Emirates have made it illegal to drive anything built previous of 1989. Remember how quickly we removed CFC's from the market place to stop the hole in the ozone layer? If the wacko's, who contribute to the politicians war chests get the ear of government we could see major changes happen quickly.
