I just replaced the serpentine belt on our '03 Silhouette. It probably still had the original belt in it at 125,000 miles since it had GM numbers on it. I figured I better check the one in the '03 Alero. That also has a GM belt in it, at a 110,000 miles, and it is not looking too pretty. What has me curious is that belt length indicator on the Silhouette was all the way to the long (worn out) end but the Alero is still all the way on the short end like a new belt would be.

The '03 Alero supposedly has a 1st design belt and a 2nd design belt. The belt in our Alero in 2210 mm. The local parts store has a 1st design belt that is 2208 mm and a second design belt at 2225 mm. So, if I use the closest length belt which would be the 2208 belt, I would be using a shorter belt than what is on there now and it is already as short as the indicator goes. The belt on there now was on it when we got it a couple of years ago.

I had a rusted tensioner on a car once that did not allow the tensioner to move all the way over to show how worn it really was but this one seems fine and the belt is tight.

So, my question is: has any one had any experience like this and does anyone know how to tell which belt the car should have on it? The build date was 1/03. I've read that it depends on which alternator bracket it was made with but can't find a number on the bracket. I'm a little concerned that this may have too short of a belt on it and may need the 2225 mm belt.

Here is the parts breakdown. 2210mm appears to be correct. Auto parts is 2mm shy which is about .008 of inch shorter. I do see the bracket number is the real key. But if you have the original belt number? Then you should use that number.
