Jetaway Trans.
at the risk of sounding stupid but could some of you give me some background on the Jetaway.
I enjoy looking at the older Cutlass models and I hope in the future there may be a Cutlass out there for me and I'd like to know how the 2 speed held up,positives,negatives,performance and such.

Wikepedia link mentions that the ST300 was known as simply automatic for Pontiacs. It is known as TEMPESTORQUE. Pontiac used the same name for the 61-63 automatic transaxles that were modified Corvair Powerglides.
I don't recall dual pattern ST300's. Always thought the Pontiac SOHC sixes were different than the 230 and 250 Chevy sixes as far a bell pattern.
The 2004r transmissions do have bop and chevy patterns though.
Never heard bad things about ST300s. The switch pitch transmissions are more desirable but only available on Buick and Olds 64-67.

hey guys, thanks for getting back to me. I'm a bit confused by the "switch pitch" and "variable vane". I thought the variable vane was Olds specific and switch pitch was a Buick named trans.
Now as for the operation of the Jetaway, how does the 2 speed perform? Is it a low 1st gear and an unlimited (for the lack of a better word) 2nd gear for top end?
How are they on the highway at 65+mph? Do they strain/whine to cruise at those higher speeds?
L69; you said your "is awesome when it's working", can you elaborate on that a little, what do you mean when it's working,are there certain issues. thanks for the link too.
if anyone would,give me the good,the bad and the ugly on them. I guess trying to get with the whole 2 speed (only) thing is throwing me.
my grandfather had a '65 f-85 4door which we got after he passed many many years ago and I drove the car a few times,but we're going back to '84 and to be honest I think it was a 3 speed but I cannot be certain at this time. It was a great car,super quick and fun to drive. it was a bare bones car w/p/s and man brakes.
any other info would be great but thank again for the replies,

You are correct variable vane is specific to olds and switch pitch to buick. Well my many 66 cars that I have owned only a handful had the variable came work. Sometimes the internal switch / solenoid goes bad sometimes the wires inside the tranny itself which are surrounded by tranny fluid goes bad and sometimes the bell crank on the throttle link goes bad. Either way when it does not work the cars will become a pig. Rebuilding a jet away can cost more the a th350 so most guys just swap the tranny when they no longer work.

Either way, I would opt for the turbo 350 but if you want to keep the Jetaway for originality I am sure someone on here could sell you a jetaway Torque Converter. They are pretty cheap.
